What Happens in the Dark... is the forty-first episode of Power Rangers Universe. This is the first in a two-part arc revolving around Florian's defection from the Arkeyan Empire, and features the debut of Metal Florian's personal megazord, the Metal Squad Megazord.

Synopsis[]

Arthur and the others are finally able to leave O'Thala after days of being stranded, but they return to find the Destiny still in an extremely fractured state following their absence. The situation is made worse when they are forced to confront Florian once more as he has been brainwashed further using a stronger substance of Metal Spice by His Magnificence, to ensure that the rangers are never able to release him from his corruption.

Plot[]

On the Destiny, work is being done by the minute to restore the station's systems back to normal in the aftermath of Gazla's attack, and more ships are arriving to help. Russell continues to oversee this, as he holds an emergency seminar on the bridge with Megan, Wild Bill, and Bronzee regarding His Magnificence's plans to use Florian. He even reveals that the option of last resort will probably have to be destroying Florian altogether, but Bronzee is against this, stating that there has to be a way she can save him. Megan wonders if there's a Sector Key that will allow them to go into Florian's mind. Russell confirms he has no knowledge of any keys with that ability, but will have a look. On O'Thala, meanwhile, Colonel Xiao and Joi are helping Arthur, Dimitri, Ryan, and Moose pack away their hideout, as a merchant vessel ordered to rescue the group by Russell has arrived on O'Thala, to take them back to the Destiny, Colonel Xiao and Joi summon their own individual voyagers as Arthur and the others board the vessel, but not before Arthur and Ryan thank Hercule, Leon, and the townsfolk of O'Thala for saving their lives. Hercule tells Arthur that the people of O'Thala are in their debt and will be rooting for Star Battleforce from here on, and gives him some advice when using the newly-obtained Universal Sector Key. With that, the ship departs as Hercule, Leon, and the O'Thala townsfolk watch on.

Arthur and the others are on the vessel, with Colonel Xiao and Joi towing at the vessel's side in their voyagers; Arthur's relieved to have survived his recent cast-away with the others, as 263 mentions that they'd probably be toast if not for Orion Pax and the Universal Sector Key. Dimitri says that they can properly focus now on getting Florian back. Unbeknownst to them, they are intercepted by a convoy of Death Gliders, led by Metal Florian, whose own zord has even been corrupted. The glider fleet opens fire on the vessel resulting in major damage to the main engines, provoking Arthur, 263, Ryan, Dimitri and Moose to summon their voyagers. They are easily able to take care of the death gliders as they fight their way to the station, but some A-Drones are closing in on them. Colonel Xiao orders Moose and Joi to form the Drago Pride Megazord with him, but Florian's voyager knocks Moose's out of the way of his intended position, but his voyager is unable to dock with the Megazord. Colonel Xiao, realising the others are overwhelmed, gives the order to retreat back to the Destiny, and cancels the formation. Moose recovers and attempts to catch up with the others, only to be captured by some henchmen a mysterious criminal group with ties to the Arkeyans, who surround and disable his voyager, which leaves him no other option but to surrender.

The others, having de-morphed en route, arrive back on the Destiny, which is still in the midst of recovery following Gazla's attack. Bronzee, Megan and Bill have a rather emotional reunion with Arthur and Ryan, as Russell notices Moose is missing, and asks Dimitri where he is, only for the latter to fall to his knees, guilty at the prospect of losing him again. Arthur is unaware about what happened to Moose, but Russell decides to not focus on Moose for now, and cuts to the chase - by briefing Arthur, Ryan, Dimitri and 263 about what His Magnificence intends to do in terms of further corrupting Florian. He notes that he knows very little about His Magnificence's place in greater detail for now, but he does know that he does intend to make Metal Florian a pivotal asset in his efforts against Star Battleforce, so they have to come up with a plan to stop him as soon as possible. On Xibalba, His Magnificence is intent on further brainwashing Florian, and doing so in a way that can ensure that the rangers can never restore him. Malvor belives that Metal Spice is an ever-evolving substance once it reacts to organic matter, and given that Florian is in possession of a Sector Key, his reaction to it could be far more extreme than initially believed, meaning that Florian could be another senator of His Magnificence. Pom-Pom marvels at this prospect as well, claiming that "her beloved" Florian would even become more powerful than His Magnificence and even go as far as overthrowing him.

As the hours progress, Russell and Bronzee work on a serum that can potentially bypass Florian's brainwashing and penetrate through the advanced levels of Metal Spice that His Magnificence had subdued him with. As they work, the Destiny gets a message from Pom-Pom, who demands the rangers to come to the planet Tiamut, if they dare, as she has a big surprise for them. Ryan says they should ignore it, as it could be a trap, but Arthur believes it's their only chance to save Florian. With a spin of the Ranger Lottery, Arthur, 263, Ryan, Dimitri and Megan are chosen for deployment, while Russell and Bronzee keep working on the serum. Arthur and the others arrive on Tiamut, and are thrown into confusion as to what Pom-Pom has in store for them. All of a sudden, the group is incapacitated by a metal spice shockwave, but 263, unaffected, disables Pom-Pom momentarily, and is questioned by Pom-Pom as to how he could survive following the chaos on O'Thala; He claims that it was the late Orion Pax that saved them from a worse fate. Arthur demands to know where Florian is, so Pom-Pom introduces a further brainwashed Florian before them, much to their horror. After Florian morphs, the group morphs, with Arthur taking on Pom-Pom while the others attempt to stop Florian. To cause much further distraction for everyone, Malvor, watching in satisfaction, decides to send in some Roswells, and orders Pom-Pom to infuse some metal spice into the horde, multiplying their strength drastically. which escalates the chaos.

As this happens, Bronzee finishes the serum, so she decides to give it to Florian, but the others are doubtful, since she is who Florian wants. Wild Bill pressures Bronzee into going, as that could the last chance the group has at getting Florian back. With that, Bronzee morphs, and deploys herself to Tiamut. As a direct consequence of the metal spice, the Roswells overpower the group, which allows Metal Florian to get the upper hand on the group, although Arthur upmorphs to Ranger Series Orion to turn the tables. Florian continues to use metal spice-infused attacks to overpower Arthur and the others, but 263 narrowly blocks Metal Florian's decisive blow, moments before Bronzee arrives. Arthur suggests using Bronzee's Uni-Bowgun UWS configuration with the serum to purify Florian, but Dimitri warns her that it may not be enough since Florian's metal spice levels are off the charts. Cautiously, Bronzee performs a Libra Impact Barrage, with the serum infused. She deals damage to Florian, but Florian manages to deflect the shot intended to purify him, much to everyone's horror, especially Russell's as he watches the chaos from the Destiny. Laughing maniacally, Pom-Pom and Malvor both fall back, as Florian summons his corrupted Voyager, which fires chaotically at those on the ground. Arthur, 263 and the others summon their Voyagers, while Florian uses his voyager's broadened array of capabilities to further overpower them, including duplicating into copies.

Praying upon the Rangers' weaknesses, he has four duplicates of his zord form a megazord resembling the Voyager Squad Megazord, dubbed the Metal Squad Megazord. To counter this, Arthur forms the Voyager Squad Megazord with Ryan, Bronzee, Megan and Dimitri, while 263 forms the Phoenix Steel Megazord; Florian's megazord brutally overpowers the group, with the aura of metal spice rendering his Megazord immune to all of the rangers' attacks, with 263 noting that this is way more metal spice radiating out of Florian. To his advantage, the megazord incapacitates each ranger by inducing all seven in destabilizing hallucination of Metal Florian's face, rendering the Megazords vulnerable to a barrage of chaotic attacks. Although both megazords have endured critical damage, The Voyager Squad initiates a Universal Hyper Slash, while the Phoenix Steel Megazord initiates a Phoenix Steel Inferno Strike, only to have both attacks absorbed, converted into metal spice, and redirected at them, brutally countering their attacks. After incapacitating the group one more time with a more severe hallucination - one which Bronzee is able to break free of momentarily - Florian delivers a finisher, in which the megazord fires an extremely powerful beam of Metal Spice from his chest, obliterating both megazords in a grisly defeat for the rangers, leaving the fates of Arthur, 263, Megan, Dimitri, Bronzee and Ryan unknown, while the rest of the group looks on from the Destiny in horror, as Metal Florian laughs maniacally as a massive purple explosion engulfs the megazord's surrounding area.
