Dr. Thomas "Tommy" Oliver (b. October 20, 1979 as Thomas Marshall) is the longest-serving Power Ranger of all time. He started as a transfer student at Angel Grove High School who was brainwashed by Rita Repulsa to become the Green Ranger and fought the Mighty Morphin Rangers, serving as the central antagonist of the five-part miniseries "Green With Evil".

Later when his new team discovered the Zeo Crystal, Tommy was chosen to become Zeo Ranger V - Red of the Zeo Rangers.

Many years later, Tommy returns in Power Rangers Wild Force, leading a special mission with the Veteran Red Rangers against the remnants of the Machine Empire.

Years later, Tommy graduated from college, he discovered the Dino Gems and became a teacher at Reefside High, becoming the Black Dino Ranger and mentor of the Dino Rangers.

Retroactively, he is also referred to as the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger or Green Mighty Morphin Ranger, as well as Zeo Red Ranger or Red Zeo Ranger, though these are in reference to the show, as opposed to proper labels. He has also been labeled Dino Thunder Black Ranger or Black Dino Thunder Ranger, a variation on his in-show label.

Tommy also returns in Power Rangers Megaforce, leading the Legendary Rangers to help the Mega Rangers fight against the Armada and the remnants of Emperor Mavro's thousands of X Borgs.

Many years later, Tommy form his own family, he returned in Power Rangers Ninja Steel along with the other Legendary Rangers, helping the Ninja Steel Rangers against Lord Draven and his army of Robo Rangers.

After being returned to normal in Power Rangers Mighty Morphin - The Return: Once & Always, Tommy stepped down as the Green Ranger and gave his Dragon Power Coin to Olivia.

History[]

Early life[]

Little is known about Tommy's early life other than he was adopted by the Oliver family at a young age with nothing known about his biological family. For an unknown reason, Tommy Marshall lost his family and lived alone. On his third night living in the streets by himself, he trusted another homeless person to keep watch as he slept, and consequently lost his wallet and belongings. Soon till about the age of 7, Tommy met his friend Tyler and eventually was taken in by an orphanage, until he was adopted by his mother.

Tommy is a new student to Angel Grove who was chosen by Rita Repulsa to become her own evil Green Ranger. He was eventually stopped by the Power Rangers who broke Rita's spell over him. When he came to, Tommy realized all the damage he'd done and felt terrible, but Jason assured him it was only because of Rita's spell. Tommy decided to join the Power Rangers as their Sixth Ranger, much to the confusion of the Angel Grove citizens. Despite their welcome, Tommy continues to feel like an outsider and has been haunted by Rita's presence.

His brother, David, was adopted by Sam Trueheart, although the two would not meet until Tommy was 18. At some point in his life, Tommy took an interest in martial arts, mainly karate, and he later became a master at it.

Mighty Morphin Era[]

Green With Evil[]

While he was a high school freshman, Tommy and his family moved to Angel Grove and he entered a martial arts tournament and fought Jason. They tied at 4-4 despite Jason being labeled "Angel Grove's finest [martial artist]" by the announcer but the fight had earned him Jason's respect. Tommy later scares Bulk and Skull away when they are harassing Kimberly, who was enamored by Tommy at first sight and invites him to hang out with her and her friends. Rita Repulsa noticed Tommy's fight with Jason and realizes there is potential in the young man. Therefore, she kidnaps Tommy after testing him against the Putty Patrol, placing him under a spell that makes him her completely mindless slave. Using the secret sixth Power Coin - the Dragon Coin - she transformed him into the evil Green Ranger. Tommy traveled to the Command Center and put Zordon out of commission and downloaded a virus into Alpha 5. He then fights the Power Rangers and defeats them before withdrawing as Rita intended this as just a warning of things to come. Out Of Control

Being under Rita's influence, Tommy becomes very sullen and rude to Kimberly when she questions where he was since his kidnapping made Tommy miss a date with her. With the Rangers at their weakest, Rita decides the time to attack is now. After Tommy defeats a squad of Putties without his powers, Rita gives him the Sword of Darkness which not only enhances his dark powers but also acts as a catalyst for keeping him under her evil spell. She then has Tommy transport Jason into the Dark Dimension where he faces down Goldar and nearly gets butchered. Tommy eventually takes the honor from the Goldar and faces Jason himself but, once he is about to impale the Red Ranger, Jason narrowly escapes his grasp when the other Rangers teleport him out. For his failure, Rita traps Tommy in the Dark Dimension until further notice. Jason's BattleThe Rescue

While the Rangers were defending Angel Grove from Goldar, Tommy entered the Command Center and attempted to sabotage it again. Alpha placed him in a stasis lock, but he was freed by Rita, who then made him grow. He joined Goldar and Scorpina in fighting the Megazord, as Rita cast a spell to create an eclipse to remove the Megazord's power. The Megazord separated and the Dinozords fell under the earth. When the Rangers retreated into the Command Center, Alpha revealed that the stasis lock the Green Ranger was kept in allowed his true identity to be revealed ā€” Tommy Oliver. Eclipsing Megazord

Realizing that Rita's spell was the reason for Tommy's strange behavior, Kimberly confronted him in the Youth Center, but he informed her that (along with knowing the other Rangers' identities) she and the other Power Rangers would soon be destroyed. Using his Dragon Dagger that he received from Rita, the Green Ranger summoned his Zord, the Dragonzord, to destroy Angel Grove. In the meantime, Alpha re-established Zordon's link with the dimension and the Megazord was recovered. Jason and the others took down the Dragonzord and, when facing the Green Ranger, Jason destroyed the Sword of Darkness and freed Tommy from Rita's spell. When he came to, Tommy realized all the damage he had done and felt terrible, but Jason assured him it was only because of Rita's spell. Tommy accepted the Rangers' offer to join them. With the Dragonzord on their side, the Rangers now had access to Dragonzord in Battle Mode, and eventually the powerful Ultrazord. At the Command Center, Tommy accepts Zordon's rules of being a Ranger, and receives a Wrist Communicator from Billy. The team of five has turned into six, also making him the first ever Sixth Ranger. Breaking The Spell

Redemption[]

Initially, Tommy stays a loner. Though he joins the other Rangers in some activities, he often leaves to go to karate practice and other martial arts up to and including a karate commercial. As the battles increased, Tommy became closer to the team and formed friendships with them. He admired Zack's sense of fun, Trini's dedication, and Billy's intelligence. He also had a crush on Kimberly and they eventually started dating.

Tommy's friendship with Jason takes a little longer to develop. In the beginning, there's a rivalry between him and Jason as both are equally skilled at martial arts. After joining the Ranger though, Tommy constantly tries to show up Jason. Zordon is aware of the problem and sends the two on a mission to recover special blasters protected by the Zord called Titanus (who becomes a powerhouse of the team) to defeat Rita's Super Putties. It is there that Tommy and Jason learn to work together. The two form a deep bond and begin teaching martial arts together as well as competing together. Tommy takes in a lot of Jason's leadership skills which would help him in the long road ahead. Gung Ho!

The Green Candle[]

While out walking with Kimberly, Tommy is attacked and captured by Goldar and taken to Rita's Dark Dimension. Goldar reveals that the material that once encased Tommy and turned him evil was actually magic wax which was linked to his Morphing powers. By turning the wax into a Green Candle, Rita is able to ensure that as the candle burned, his powers will slowly fade away, and when the candle burns out, Rita will reclaim his powers for good. As the candle burns faster if Tommy is in its vicinity, Rita commanded Goldar to kidnap Tommy and take him to the Dimension where the candle is kept. The only way to get to and extinguish the Green Candle is to defeat Goldar without his Morpher. Rita then sends down the shapeshifting Cyclops to keep the other Rangers from interfering by having it pose as the Dragonzord and making the Rangers think that Tommy has gone evil. Tommy is able to grab Goldar's sword during their fight and send himself back to Earth where he aids the Rangers in battle against the Cyclops and forces it to retreat. The Green Candle, Part I

While the other Rangers go to retrieve the candle, the Cyclops returns and Tommy has to fight the monster alone. With Tommy using all his strength to fight Cyclops, Jason and the Rangers have to return to help him but the Green Candle quickly burns out even with Cyclops slain. Before all is lost to Rita, Zordon tells Tommy to give his coin to another Ranger with a strong link to the Morphin Grid to prevent Rita from getting its powers. Tommy chooses to pass his Dragon Coin to Jason which means that the Red Ranger can now draw upon the remnants of the Green Ranger powers to use the Dragon Shield in battle and the Dragon Dagger to summon the Dragonzord. Tommy says goodbye to the team but they assure him he'll always be a Power Ranger in spirit. Tommy assures Jason that it isn't his fault for not retrieving the Green Candle as he tried his best. Even though Tommy is no longer the Green Ranger, he stays friends with the Rangers and maintains his relationship with Kimberly. The Green Candle, Part II

Doomsday[]

In the end of the second part of the Doomsday episode, he makes a cameo.

Zeo[]

A Zeo Beginning[]

File:Tommy morph.jpg

"Zeo Ranger V; Red!"

Tommy and the others escaped before it blew, and Tommy found the repaired Zeo Crystal under the wreckage. They also stumbled upon the Power Chamber, built in the case of the Center's destruction, with Zordon and Alpha alive. However, trouble brewed yet again when King Mondo and his Machine Empire sent Rita and Zedd away and started his own plans for taking over Earth. Harnessing the power from the Zeo Crystal, Tommy and the others took the next step in protecting Earth by becoming the Zeo Rangers. Tommy once again assumed command of the team; with the power of the Red Zeo Crystal, he became the Red Zeo Ranger (Zeo Ranger V Red), controlling Zeo Zord 5 and his own special Zord, the Red Battlezord. A Zeo Beginning

Found and Lost[]

During his time as a Zeo Ranger, Tommy endured many hardships. One of his biggest was when Kimberly sent him a "Dear John" letter saying she had found love during her training and decided to break off her relationship with him. Katherine tried to help Tommy through his heartbreak by trying to hook him up with a professional snowboarder named Heather; while the relationship seemed promising, Tommy's duty as a Zeo Ranger kept him from the various dates. Eventually, Tommy ended up going out on a date with Katherine.

Tommy also had a recurring dream about True of Heart. One day he bumped into a man named Sam who looked exactly like him. Tommy offered to take Sam home, where he found someone who looked remarkably similar to him. When Tommy went after him, the man seemed to vanish. Sam, revealing his name to be Sam Trueheart, told Tommy that once he completed his quest, the identity of the young man would be revealed.

Once Tommy completed the quest, he was surprised to find out that the young man, David Trueheart, was his brother. David revealed to have the other half of the arrowhead; when put together, the bearer would have control of the power of spirits trapped within a hidden stone. Tommy was thrilled to have a brother and quickly took him to meet his friends. Originally everything was fine, but after Tommy defeated David in a karate match, David felt embarrassed and ran off. Feeling bad, Tommy went after him only to find that he had been captured by King Mondo for the arrowhead. Tommy gave it to him, but Mondo double-crossed him. Transforming into the Red Ranger, Tommy located his brother and led him to safety. David insisted on going back to find Tommy, as Mondo had threatened to hurt him. Although Tommy tried to convince David that he's okay, David would not give up. Reluctantly Tommy took off his helmet and revealed his identity to David. Tommy succeeded in getting the arrowhead back, and both brothers decided to keep their respective halves.

The Power of Gold[]

When the Rangers were fighting King Mondo's monster Wolfbane, a Gold Ranger appeared to help. The identity of the Gold Ranger remained a mystery for some time; Tommy thought it was Billy, who had stepped down as a Ranger and was their technical adviser. The new Ranger was then forced to reveal himself as Trey, an alien of the planet Triforia. Unfortunately, due to his molecular makeup, he was split into three with no way of being joined together until he went back to his planet to heal. Trey needed a successor to carry on the powers and, with Billy not being able to handle the energy (due to absorbing negative proton energy from the Command Center's destruction), Tommy needed to find someone else. Luckily, Jason had returned from the peace conferences recently, so Tommy asked him if he would step in as the Gold Ranger. Knowing that King Mondo was also interested in the Gold Power, Jason agreed, and hurried back to the Command Center where the Treys gave Jason the Golden Staff and the Gold Ranger powers. Before leaving, the Treys gave the Rangers the Super Zeo Zords, and Tommy would control Super Zeo Zord 5

King for a Day[]

File:GAG9.jpg

Tommy with his girlfriend, Kat.

Always being the target for the forces of evil, Tommy was abducted by the Machine Empire and brainwashed into working for them. Prince Gasket introduced himself and told Tommy that he was the King of the Machine Empire and that the Power Rangers were evil and needed to be destroyed. Tommy was reluctant to believe him, but after viewing images of the Rangers' destruction, Tommy knew that the Rangers had to be destroyed. Jason and Kat found out Tommy was being brainwashed and transported themselves to the arena where Tommy was. The Zeo Rangers fought Tommy, but realized the only way to remove him from Prince Gasket's grasp was to show him who his friends were so they demorphed in front of him. Seeing the familiar faces, Tommy began having old memories and knew that the Rangers were good.

The Lost Episode[]

Tommy was seen in archive footage, along with various Rangers and villains, when Austin St. John and Walter Jones related about the Power Rangers' team from Mighty Morphin until the recently Lost Galaxy. The Lost Episode

In College[]

After his tenure as a Ranger was over, Tommy went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he decided to get a Doctorate in Paleontology, a fascination brought on by his days with the dinosaur inspired Mighty Morphin' team. While researching fossils, Tommy found the Red, Blue, and Yellow Dino Gems, remnants of the asteroid which killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. After learning the power the gems contained, Tommy knew they would be misused if in the wrong hands, so he hid them.

While he was in college, Tommy met Hayley Ziktor, who helped him create the Dino Morphers, which could harness the gems' power to create the Dino Thunder Power Rangers. He was also partners with Terrence "Smitty" Smith and Dr. Anton Mercer on a dinosaur-related project that would lead to the creation of the Tyrannodrones, Raptor Riders and the Biozords.

A horrible lab accident turned Mercer into Mesogog, who seized the project's creations, including the Tyrannodrones, attempted to capture and/or kill Tommy and destroyed the island they'd been working on. Tommy, who was unaware that Mesogog was Mercer, started to work on the Dino Thunder powers with Hayley, in case Mesogog resurfaced. Tommy also lost contact with Smitty after Anton chose Tommy over him, but was unaware that he, too, had a lab accident, becoming Zeltrax.

Wild Force[]

Tommy was in contact with Andros the Red Space Ranger and, aware of his mission trailing General Venjix and the remaining survivors of the Machine Empire. Andros contacted him when he was staying at Club Bulkmeier, a club owned by Bulk - who was intimidated by Tommy, nervously calling him "sir", Tommy lead this special mission decide to recruit eight other Red Rangers to stop the Machine Empire.

All the Red Rangers are reunited in the NASADA's space port, where Tommy meets Carter Grayson, Wesley Collins, Eric Myers, and Cole Evans the current Red Ranger, also he explains that he would be leading the team of Red Rangers. When they were about to leave in the Astro Megaship Mark II, at the last second, Jason pulls up to the group on a motorcycle, surprising Tommy somewhat. Jason explains that he didn't think the mission would feel right without the original Red Ranger, Tommy and the other Red Rangers board the Astro Megaship Mark II, during the travel to the Moon

In The Astro Megaship Mark II, listening that Andros contacted with Leo and Aurico from Mirinoi and Aquitar respectfully. Tommy use a projector in the Astro Megaship room showing the Machine Empire and Serpentera. Tommy, recounts to the other Red Rangers, about the rising of the Machine Empire and how he and the other Zeo Rangers destroy their boss King Mondo and most of their Empire, but the remnants of the Machine Empire lead by General Venjix reunited on the moom to unearth the evil Zord Serpentera, he says many years ago when Lord Zeed was defeated, his personal Zord was hidden on the lunar surface.

On the moon, Venjix and his other generals prepare to board Serpentera but they are then interrupted by the Red Rangers. Venjix sends Cogs to distract the eight Rangers while he and the others proceed to Serpentera. Tommy do battle with the Cogs unmorphed and dispose of them with relative ease, Cole is rescued by Leo and Aurico on Leo's Jet Jammer. As the other Rangers catch up, Leo unmorphs and tells Andros that he and Aurico had gotten there as soon as they could. Venjix and the other Generals then arrive and are shocked to see ten Red Rangers before them. All of the Rangers then morph with their respective calls (except Aurico, who never appears demorphed) and do battle with the Generals in groups of two, Tommy and Wes fight Gerrok and Tommy destroys him with the Zeo Flying Power Kick.

With no time to get to the Ship before it takes off, Tommy and the other Red Rangers rely on Cole with his Wild Force Rider to battle Venjix. Both Venjix and Serpentera are destroyed for good, truly ending the Machine Empire menace once and for all. Afterwards, the nine human Rangers part ways, and Cole remarks how Tommy appeared to be the "greatest Ranger ever" with the other Rangers bragging of their exploits. Forever Red

Dino Thunder[]

Tommy resurfaced as a science teacher at a school in the city of Reefside, California. A trio of detention students ā€” Conner McKnight, Ethan James, and Kira Ford ā€” unraveled Tommy's past as a Power Ranger Legacy of Power after uncovering three artifacts from his lab that turned them into Power Rangers. Tommy recruited them to become the Dino Rangers, doing so while seeming mysterious and somewhat obnoxious, as noted by Conner. When he discovered Mesogog was still active, he stole another Dino Gem and joined the other Rangers as the Black Dino Thunder Ranger, aided by the power of invisibility from the Black Dino Gem. His Dinozord was the Brachiozord carrier, he wielded the Brachio Staff, and he drove the Black Thunder ATV. Back in Black

When the White Dino Ranger appeared, Tommy's dedication to saving lives seemed to give Tommy cause to show no mercy to him, even after he found out he was Trent Mercer. For a while, he was encased in amber by the White Dino Ranger, and once freed, was unable to de-morph, due to his Dino Gem and his Morpher re-molecularizing. He remained in his Morphed form for a while. Despite this resolve, he could not help but feel sympathy for Trent when his students wouldn't, reminding them that he was infamously in the same predicament years ago as the evil Green Ranger, and that out of all the Evil Rangers that had existed, he was the one that had come closest to ending them once and for all. White Thunder

After seeing the power of the White Ranger Clone and the Terrorsaurus, Tommy decided the Rangers needed an upgrade. He took Trent to the location of the Shield of Triumph, as it could only be freed from its resting place by the power of Trent's Dino Gem. He also had a hunch that Conner was the one destined to control the shield. He was right, as Conner showed up just in time to save it from being lost forever. Tommy informed the others they had to contribute their energies to the shield, and Conner became the Triassic Ranger. He was later de-morphed by a special substance, but was rendered invisible as a result.Triassic Triumph

An experiment sees the return of Tommy to his natural state, but the process shatters his Dino Gem and renders Tommy in a coma. During this time, Tommy would endure three internal battles, facing off against three of his past Ranger egos: the Green and White Power Rangers and the Red Zeo Ranger (during each of these fights, the screen was tinted the color that matched the Ranger). After proving that he would not give up the fight for his life, his opponents each offered him a shattered piece of his Dino Gem. Tommy would awake holding the newly repaired Dino Gem in his hand. As a result, he also gained Super Dino Mode. Fighting Spirit

When he learned that Trent was hiding his father's secret identity, Tommy considered asking Trent to surrender his Morpher. Though Tommy came to understand Trent's loyalty, he left the decision of letting Trent stay with the team to the other Rangers. They decided to let Trent stay after he saved Conner's life. In the final battle against Zeltrax, Tommy advised the Rangers that the only means to succeed would be to sacrifice their Zords. At the end of the series, Tommy destroyed Zeltrax, alongside Kira. The Dino Rangers sacrificed their Dino Gems to destroy Mesogog's ultimate form(s). By that point, Mesogog had already managed to separate himself from Dr. Anton Mercer. In the end, Tommy would pursue the simple life of a high school science teacher finally retiring his life as a Power Ranger for good, however, no Power Ranger, even Tommy, can escape the power forever. Rangers Syd, Sky, Sam, and Doggie Crugar who appears in the battle but are surrounded by Krybots and Tyrannodrones. Despite not being too many, the Rangers decide not to give up and fight.

Tommy teams up with Doggie Cruger the S.P.D. Shadow Ranger against Zeltrax, attacking both with a descending sword attack by part of Tommy using his Brachio Staff and a ascending attack by part of Doggie using the Shadow Saber, they defeat Zeltrax just before he retreats. Later, he joins his team when forming the Z-Rex Blaster to help the S.P.D. Rangers and their Canine Cannon on a final blast against the army.

Following their victory, it's unknown if S.P.D erased Tommy's memories to not interfere with the timeline. Wormhole

Soul of the Dragon[]

In the intervening time since "Once & Always," J.J. has become an adult and an S.P.D. cadet.

Years later (sometime after 2025), Tommy Oliver has completely left Ranger duties and has become an ordinary civilian operating as a school teacher. Having apparently moved from Reefside California in the meantime, he now works at the high school in Bridgetown Township. Tommy, Kat and the rest of the teachers encounters in the Farewell party Tommy is laid off from his job (now working at Bridgetown Township's High School) when the entire science department is scrapped for lack of funds, which a friend of Tommy called Roger. When an unnamed woman with them asks if he has any other jobs, Tommy just says that he doesn't know what to do now whereas Kat (also a teacher) is going on a class trip to Triforia for a few weeks but will then be going on vacation with her husband to get away from it all though she insists he takes it easy in the meantime. Before he can object though, head of science David McCarthy takes the stage and reminds everyone of the bitter sweet reason they are there before toasting to Tommy for being "an amazing teacher, a fantastic husband and a great friend" before wishing him well.

The next day, near Newtech City spaceport, Tommy and Kat sit in their car waiting for a Space Patrol Delta checkpoint to clear them so that Kat can be dropped off for her school trip. In the intervening years since he was last a Ranger, Tommy has somehow gained a back problem with Kat reminding him that he was supposed to have it examined. When he asks if she has talked to their son J.J. Oliver recently, she tells him that he rang to tell her of Varox radicals on Triforia as a warning due to her soon going there. Tommy questions why an army of S.P.D. officers are guarding the spaceport entrance but Kat reminds him of the gang war but Tommy tells her it bothers him being unable to do anything. Twenty-thirty years ago, they were reshaping worlds and saving millions if not billions of lives with Kat reminding him that but Tommy wonders if it actually made the world safer. Kat is sick of Tommy and his introspective depression (a now apparent common occurrence) before telling him that he has improved lives in all of his endeavors. They have a thriving society coexisting with aliens in an almost utopic world all because of them defending the world in the past and that the "what ifs" don't matter in this case since what's done is done and this type of thought can only end badly. Tommy apologizes but Kat just says its due to his stress from being made redundant but that he has earnt the rest after all the things he's gone through and they can finally sort things out once she returns from Triforia. After some flirting, after which Kat tells him she'll call him and his doctor when she touches down on Triforia, they kiss and she leaves whilst Tommy has more back pains.

Presumably later that day, Tommy sees his doctor at Newtech City Hospital where it is revealed that the problem is that part of his spine is being punched by his neck muscles and he should be crippled on the floor in pain. Though Tommy (being stubborn) brushes it off, the follow-up jolt to correct the issue makes him yell in pain only to be relived right after whilst the doctor reminds him that he has been intentionally putting off coming for three weeks. When Tommy apologizes, the doctor shrugs it off since it's not his decision when Tommy comes in whilst giving a snarky comment that Tommy must be masochistic to put up with that pain. When the doctor asks about when the cybernetics on his back, he says it hasn't been "re-contacted" since they were fitted with the doctor clarifying after his car crash. Said "car crash", remenbing his fight against an gigantic evil alien, he reaffirms it and the doctor is impressed by him not having it checked for eight years but the leads are shot so they need a diagnostic within the next week for better replacements. As they part, the doctor gives the age old idiom about age happening "to the best of us" before getting his assistant to arrange another appointment on the following Tuesday.

Returning to his home, he's looking at a picture of himself and the original five other Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. After doing so, he looks over at his Master Morpher, now visibly cracked and smashed, remenbin the day that it's destroyed, however his rememberance are inetrrupted when Tommy gets a call which turns out to be from J.J., Tommy says it was fine save for J.J.'s absence who couldn't be there due to work at S.P.D. but he can't say what due to confidentiality (to which Tommy isn't very impressed) and then J.J. asks about the doctor's visit and is told about the replacement. As JJ remarks about him having more than enough time for it, a black car with blacked out windows pulls up and JJ ends the call though not before Tommy asks how long it'll be before the next call due to the several month difference and suggests the next weekend. JJ asks for the weekend after that before they say their goodbyes and the call hangs off immediately before Tommy takes his Master Morpher and leaves.

Tommy is getting his groceries together from Non-Branded Store only to have a humanoid enter his car and sit down unprompted. she is J.J.'s friend Anara, Tommy listening Anara's words that J.J. is in danger since he was supposed to meet her a few nights earlier, Tommy comments that it must be S.P.D. being S.P.D. but Anara comments that J.J. quit S.P.D. for several weeks ago to his immense surprise for reasons he refuses to discuss although she suspects that he outright doesn't trust Space Patrol Delta. Tommy outright asks if she is accusing SPD but all she says is that she brought it up to her superiors and got stonewalled before revealing that she knows his nature as a former Power Ranger and that JJ told her to come to him should she ever need to. Before leaving for her shift at SPD, she gives him her number before apologizing should she be proven wrong if Tommy manages to contact his son. Tommy calls J.J. to find that the phone no longer exist. Tommy calls Kat immediately and asks when she last talked to J.J. without even saying hello. Obviously asks what he is on about so he asks her if she has received word from him on Triforia with the answer being "possibly Tuesday." Due to the uncertainty, he demands confirmation which alerts her that something is wrong so he admits what he knows though Kat doesn't believe him since, even if J.J. chose to lie to them, Sky wouldn't. However, Tommy reveals that he is in his car and going to meet Sky in person to at least try to debunk what Anara said.

At the new Delta Base Tommy meets with Sky who apologizes for the interruption to his plans but Sky just says he has a meeting later although he is actually now late due to not checking the time. Taking a stroll through the base. Back in his office, Sky finally asks the million dollar question as to what he wants since it sounded urgent over the phone with Tommy revealing what Anara said. Visibly frustrated at the mention of her, Sky asks him to elaborate but Tommy finally confronts him about his suspiciously aloof demeanor which finally breaks through to Sky who admits that J.J. did quit. Tommy berates him for not letting him know, Sky says that he thought he'd already been told and thus it would be pointless though Tommy reminds the commander how secretive both J.J. and S.P.D. are before finally demanding to know why his son quit. After asking him to calm down, Sky tells him that J.J. was apparently "spooked" by something though they don't know what and they were "giving him space to figure stuff out" and they didn't hear he had vanished until very recently. On a more personal note, Sky promises to find him if foul play occurred before asking Tommy to sit this out which he reluctantly agrees to as he leaves. Tommy calls Kat revealing that he thinks Sky is intentionally deceiving him. When finally asked what he plans on doing, he reveals that he plans to join up with Anara and launch a personal investigation. Kat says to him that she is to agree that her only wish is being for him to be extra careful. He hasn't used the Master Morpher in eight years and the last time he used it resulted in him getting crippled though he tells her that it is only as an absolute last resort before hanging up and leaving.

Later that night, Tommy has met up with Anara in his car and they discuss JJ's latest case which was sorting out the recent uprise in gang violence. its revealed that J.J as a contact named Maurice connected to someone only identified as "The Witch" and this was their meeting place before his disappearance. Tommy gets out of his car and goes to find and confront Maurice leaving Anara in the car, Tommy enters a bar only to be disgusted at the unpleasant manner in which they eat, Heading straight for the bar, he asks for a club soda due to driving but notices a bunch of very muscly ugly aliens in a corner and asks about them to the bartender whilst commenting they "look like extras from a prison break movie if it were in space." When the bartender refuses to comment, presumably due to fear but justifying it as being rude to discuss other patrons behind their backs, Tommy prods him further and mentions he is looking for Maurice. Handing over a $20 bill, the bartender exits to presumably go and find Maurice but one of the thugs from a moment ago spots Tommy staring at his entourage and confronts him for it. Being the stupid thuggish type, he immediately makes the assumption that the money exchange it to get them kicked out and the bartender refuses to back him up because the brute apparently pays more. Tommy confronts Stupid and Brooding about why he came and about Maurice but the thug has his gang attack him instead before he is shocked to the ground. Refusing to listen to reason, the thug believes he is a cop and wants his men to torture him for information which forces Tommy to morph into Dino Thunder Black, Tommy swift blast the aliens away by the Brachio Staff's Fire Strike and Water Strike.

Tommy getting a hold of the leader, he demands to know about Maurice with the thug revealing the presence of a gang who want what this mysterious figure known as "The Witch" is selling, Anara storms in where she is surprised to find Tommy morphed. Fleeing out the back of the bar, Anara asks why he morphed just saying that he has been very out of practice but suddenly de-morphs having pain to his surprise since he didn't tell it to power down. Seeing the ruined Morpher, Anara is surprised that it even still works and questions its safety, Tommy corrects her about its name. When she questions who decided on the powers used, he just says he used whatever it decided to at that time and went with it and thus. However, Anara reveals that the mechanism deciding which power it uses is fried so he can only morph in a fixed order but that isn't the only problem. The Morpher is so borked that the mechanism destroys each individual Power Coin, Tommy replies that he has no choice since he has to save J.J. which justifies the risk. Anara asks if he at least got some information from the thug but he decides that she is too young to be dealing with this dangerous business but she reminds him that he was the one who just instigated a barroom brawl despite her warning. J.J. is her friend and she came to him in the first place as the supposed adults ignored her and thus this is kind of a cruel move to pull on her and besides, he hasn't been a Power Ranger for eight years and is out of the loop with him being unable to use his powers to save his own behind and thus they need each other.

A while later, the two stand on a rooftop overlooking the construction seeing the gang, Iron Raptor the leader demands a demonstration to make sure they aren't being ripped off so the dealer brings out one of his henchmen in a demonstration. Said henchman turns out to be JJ himself, to Tommy's horror, and crushes one of the products into dust which turns him into a Mighty Morphin Green Ranger like individual. Tommy realizes that the crystals give special powers to the users whilst Anara questions why JJ is working for them but Tommy just thinks that it's a form of mind control and they decide to tail the goons to try and rescue JJ. However, one of the Iron Raptors has managed to sneak up on them during the demonstration and holds Tommy at gunpoint whilst he tells Anara to get back and morphs into the Red Turbo Ranger to the surprise of everyone nearby when the thug gets blasted full force into a wall. but quickly Tommy is confronted by J.J., his son commenting that "they've held him back for years" but this allows Tommy to grab him and appeal to the good in him but gets blasted away instead. The gang flees and J.J. looks back un-helmeted before Tommy passes out from the blast, Anara revives him as the building starts to collapse due to the amount of walls demolished by people being blasted through them but the entire building comes down immediately after she does so.

Fortunately, the two of them survive due to the now unusable Red Turbo Ranger powers just for Tommy to be crippled in pain as the collapse annihilated the servos on his back cybernetics. Tommy tells her about JJ recognizing him JJ chose to do without mind control though he doesn't know why and laments being such an apparently bad father , after an reflextion moment, the two are at some old run-down crappy looking apartments reunited with Finister Zordon's Energy Wave spared him like it did Rita, Lord Zedd and Divatox Tommy introduces her to a delighted Finster who then asks why they came and Tommy produces the crystal. Finster is visibly horrified at it as he wants nothing more to do with magic but Tommy tells him of the stakes surrounding JJ and Finster finally accepts. Taking the crystal, he believes that it is trackable with a simple spell which he casts off-panel and uses it to pinpoint the source as coming from Pasten's Tower but comments that only one person is capable of wielding such powerful dark magic. Realizing that this is why Tommy got into contact with him, he is distraught when Tommy comments that the mastermind is calling themselves "The Witch" , gaining the information about "The Witch" Tommy embraces his friend and thanks him for his help and congratulates him on his successful life with Finster concurring.

Sometime after leaving, Tommy and Anara skulk along the rooftops towards Pasten's Tower with no apparent plan due to not knowing what they are up against. Tommy reveals that the next Power Coin up is Zeo Ranger V and that the Zeo Crystal shards which supply them with power are supposed to increase with time. After forty years of off-and-on use but mostly sitting gathering power, he should be nigh unstoppable and thus he can make the clichƩ full on assault whilst Anara sneaks in. Morphing, Tommy smashes through the front door and decimates the guards to the annoyance of nearby J.J.. Anara takes this to mean that he doesn't appreciate the rescue but he corrects her; he's undercover and all of his talk about quitting S.P.D. was a ruse to try and hide the truth. At the right time, he would have called Sky and set up a sting operation to bring down "The Witch" and her operation but the two have bungled the operation just as "The Witch" is making her move. Tommy, unaware of the truth, tries to talk him down but Anara tells him the truth and J.J. comments that he told them to stay away but Tommy berates him for attacking him. J.J. points out that there wasn't much of a choice since he shot a guy straight through a wall and refusing to attack would have blown his cover but a new voice pipes up, amused to find out that J.J. is Tommy's son which is fitting for their plans. Turning, all three see "The Witch" Tommy threatens to shut off Rita's magic, when the witch ist revealed as Scorpina Tommy orders J.J. and Anara to withdraw. Unfortunately, Scorpina has been unfazed by the blast and attacks Tommy from behind only to be blown away by J.J. and Anara's blasters. As Tommy weakens though, Scorpina prepares to blast him away with her wand only for Anara and Tommy to dive out of the building to their "supposed deaths".

Fortunately, Tommy and Anara have survived their plunge thanks to Tommy's last Ranger powers and he revives Anara a while after J.J.'s kidnapping. Tommy's back is fine but his Zeo powers are no more, Tommy decides to return to Finster to see if there is more he can do to help them and he offers to leave Anara there but she decides to tag along anyway. Unfortunately, by the time they return to Finster's workshop, they find that he has been murdered by Scorpina, Tommy shutting Finster's eyes, shrugs them off and realizes that Scorpina came due to him mentioning Finster before Scorpina revealed, he sees a statue of Finster himself that wasn't there before only for the statue to come to life since Finster crafted it shortly before his death, Finster's last creation to give Tommy hope for the future. After Tommy left, he discovers that Finster did more research into the crystals, Lokar has not been seen in forty years since the defeat of Cyclopsis so this comes as a very understandable surprise to Tommy.Using old contacts, Finster established that Scorpina plans on using JJ as a sacrifice to Lokar, Tommy takes a picture of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Finster has and doubts his own abilities since everything that has occurred since Anara came to see him has gone horribly wrong. J.J. was pushed so hard to impress Tommy that he eventually ended up as a sacrificial lamb and now Finster is dead. Anara tells him however that what's done is done and we can't change the past as well as reminding him of the stakes and that only he can save J.J.. Just as she says this, Tommy's phone rings and what he sees shocks him.

In some nearby mountains, Scorpina sets up a candle ritual as J.J. is tied to a rock as a sacrifice, Tommy as Mighty Morphin White appears and reveals that J.J. has kept a transmitter on himself which allowed S.P.D. to track him. But Scorpina and an army of loyal thugs heavily outnumber Tommy but he isn't alone as he is joined by Anara, an army of Space Patrol Delta officers, Kat, the Blue Senturion, and Bridge Carson. Tommy is attacked by Scorpina in her monster form, when Scorpina prepares to crush J.J., Tommy has an idea and throws his Master Morpher to J.J. who then uses it to morph into the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger. Lokar arrives, having gotten bored of nothing happening and come to punish his minion. Scorpina asks for a moment further to capture J.J. but Lokar knows how hard even reaching out into our dimension, so decides to take her as his tribute instead and sucks him back into the Talos Dimension. With Lokar and Scorpina gone, S.P.D. and the Blue Senturion round up what's left of Scorpina's gang, while Tommy and J.J. finally bond and the family embraces.

Weeks later, J.J. and Anara see Tommy and Kat off even as J.J. tries to talk them into sticking around but they have decided to go on a holiday for a while before settling down which is something they'll discuss on a holiday. J.J. asks if he will miss being a Power Ranger but Tommy has decided to finally let go and move on with his life after spending so much time fighting evil. When J.J. snarks that he did just use up his powers, and thus he didn't have much of a choice but to abandon the life, Tommy reminds him that it was him who used them up. In conclusion, Tommy decides that it was fun being a Power Ranger but that is a job for the young and more able-bodied. Kat and J.J. hug one last time as she asks him to stay in touch as Tommy and Anara do the same with her having been glad to meet him but he reminds her that he only did this due to having such great help. A Season to Remember[]

In the future, an elderly Tommy narrates a holiday event taking place during his Zeo years to his young grandson. He is married to Katherine, and the couple have another grandson, who is implied to be a Power Ranger as well.

Personality[]

Brave, strong-willed, and dedicated, Tommy is an individual that very few people would be foolish enough to provoke. Possessed of an all-or-nothing mentality, Tommy is willing to sacrifice everything he has for the sake of his goals. It was likely for this reason that Rita chose him as her Green Ranger while she had control of the Green Power Coin. A serious and focused martial artist, Tommy is quick to criticize himself, and works hard to improve in any way he can, making him a danger not only to his enemies, but himself as well. He often goes beyond his limits, such as coping with his dwindling connection to Rita who continued to wage psychological warfare on the young man and sow the seeds of dissent and doubt in his mind.

Despite being merely a man, Tommy Oliver has walked through darkness, braved the nature of evil, and even offered a hand of friendship to a sworn enemy. He was an outsider who found his place among the Rangers, becoming the remarkable man he could have only become with those who stood beside him through all his troubles.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

  • Tommy is played in almost all of his appearances by the late Jason David Frank.
  • As the Mighty Morphin' Green Ranger, his suit actors were Erik Betts and Hien Nguyen. (And Seiji Takaiwa (高岩 ꈐäŗŒ Takaiwa Seiji?), Yasuhiro Takeuchi (ē«¹å†… åŗ·åš Takeuchi Yasuhiro?), and Naoki Ōfuji (å¤§č—¤ ē›“ęع Ofuji Naoki?) in Super Sentai footage from Zyuranger).
  • As the Zeo Ranger V - Red, his suit actor was Makoto Yokoyama (ęØŖå±±čŖ  Yokoyama Makoto?). (And Kazutoshi Yokoyama (ęØŖå±± äø€ę• Yokoyama Kazutoshi?) in Super Sentai footage from Ohranger).
  • As the Black Dino Ranger, his suit actor was Makoto Arakawa (č’å·ēœŸ Arakawa Makoto?). (And Hideaki Kusaka (ę—„äø‹ ē§€ę˜ Kusaka Hideaki?) and Jiro Okamoto (岔元 ę¬”éƒŽ Okamoto Jirō?) in Super Sentai footage from Abaranger).
  • Many of Tommy's mannerisms and habits in MMPR were added to the character to accommodate the Super Sentai footage. In Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the Japanese series from which Power Rangers used its footage, in particular Tommy's counterpart Burai had to remain in a cave to preserve his limited life force so therefore would not turn up to a battle until he was desperately needed. Therefore, Tommy would usually be preoccupied with martial arts lessons or a Putty attack and also would not turn up until later. Also, the Green Candle story arc and transfer of Tommy's powers was used for when Burai died. As Tommy had become incredibly popular with viewers, Saban later paid Toei to produce more footage which allowed for Tommy to be brought back on the show. Tommy's relationship with Kimberly lead to the resulting new footage to focus on the Green and Pink rangers frequently acting together. When the footage ran out, the Green Ranger was completely written out for Tommy to become the White Ranger, using footage from Gosei Sentai Dairanger. Tommy's occasional jumping up and down while morphed as the White Ranger was due to Kou, his Sentai counterpart, being a child and growing into adult-sized when morphed. Due to Sentai footage of the White Ranger originating from an entirely different series, Tommy rarely fought directly alongside the other five Power Rangers while morphed for the majority of season 2. When Season 3 opted to adapt footage from Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, original footage was shot to feature Tommy alongside the others more frequently.
  • Due to Disney not wanting to pay for Jason David Frank's trip to New Zealand, he did not appear in person in the episodes in which the Dino Thunder and S.P.D. Rangers team up. In the S.P.D. episode "Wormhole", aside from various recycled lines of dialogue, Jeffrey Parazzo (Trent's actor) voices Tommy and he does not appear out of costume.

Design[]

  • When the assets for "MMPR" were shipped over from Japan, the Dragon Shield and its armbands were damaged. The original Dragon Shield and its armbands were made of hard foam rubber, while the replacements made in America, for use when filming new scenes, were made of thin cloth. Also, the original Saban-made Green Ranger suit was also a noticeably different shade of green from its Sentai counterpart. This made it very obvious which shots were from Super Sentai and which were original to MMPR. This would not be corrected until a new Green Ranger costume was made for the dream sequence appearance of the Green Ranger in Dino Thunder.
    • When a new Green Ranger suit was created for Dino Thunder, its design and props differ slightly from those of the Saban Era and the original DragonRanger design. A silver trim was added along the dragon nose on the helmet, the suit's color is now more Sentai-accurate (along with new boots and gloves), and the Power Morpher was changed from the original gold color to the standard silver used by the five main Mighty Morphin Rangers. The Dragon Shield, the gloves and boots' golden trims and its armbands are now remade in the proper hard foam material of the original prop from Zyuranger, but the Dragon Shield is now double-sided, featuring the diamond shape on the back as well and both the Dragon Shield and its armbands have a matte look. The Dragon Dagger is now more Sentai-accurate (although it still does not have the buttons in the correct position on the hilt), and the holster is now white and on the wrong hip. This suit was kept for future appearances of the Green MMPR Ranger, such as a new picture of the Green Ranger used in the second volume of the Season 1 of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers on DVD, and the Complete Series DVD set and is immortalized in a Lightning Collection 2-pack that comes with a Putty Patroller figure.
    • During filming of "Legendary Battle" in Super Megaforce, this suit would be reused for the MMPR Green Ranger's appearance. However, the silver-trimmed helmet and the silver-plated Power Morpher were digitally recolored in almost every shot featuring the Green Ranger in post-production, to resemble the original DragonRanger suit and match with the Gokaiger footage, although a few shots were missed. The only change of the MMPR Green Ranger suit was the Dragon Dagger holster, which was changed to a black one and placed on the correct hip.
    • In "Dimensions in Danger" in Super Ninja Steel, this suit would change once again. The helmet was changed with a new one which no longer features the silver trim along the dragon nose and the Power Morpher was changed with a golden-plated one, as both props were remade for the episode.
    • In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, this suit changed one more time. The Dragon Shield, armbands, gloves and boots were remade with a more Sentai-accurate look. The armbands, the gloves and boots' metallic trims and the Dragon Shield now sport a metallic look, being more identical to the original ones from the Zyuranger footage. However, the armbands now features ridged sections on them, not seen on any of the previous iterations of the suit, while the diamond shape on the back of the Dragon Shield is still there.
File:White Ranger Shield difference to american & japan.png

Difference between the MMPR White Ranger's chest armor in the original and the Super Sentai footage

  • Like the MMPR Green Ranger, the MMPR White Ranger has a few differences between the original and Japanese footage. The original chest armor was made of hard-foam rubber and it's slightly smaller, while its replacement made in America for new scenes had a cheaper quality, probably made of a cheap hard-foam rubber and it's bigger. The belt it's slightly different, with the one from America lacking the black details on the buckle. This made it very obvious which shots were from Super Sentai and which were original to MMPR.
    • In the Dino Thunder episode "Fighting Spirit", this suit has a slight change. The only change of the suit was the belt, which now has the black trims on the buckle, being more similar to the one used in the Dairanger footage.
    • In the Super Ninja Steel episode "Dimensions in Danger", this suit has a slight change once again. The only change of the suit was the chest armor, which is now smaller than the previous appearances, but being more similar to the one from the Dairanger footage.
  • When Dr. Tommy Oliver arrives at Reefside High School he is wearing his last Ranger color from "Forever Red", which is red. Despite this, in the flashback scene which airs right after the opening credits in Day of the Dino: Part I, Tommy wears a black T-Shirt under a grey shirt, which is almost the same as what he wears in Day of the Dino: Part II.
