Samurai Surprise is the fifth episode of Power Rangers Space Pirates. This episode is a tribute to Power Rangers Samurai, thus features the return of Jayden Shiba and Mentor Ji, and the debut of the Legendary Samurai Megazord.

Synopsis[]

When a powerful monster named Matacore is sent by the emperor to take on the Rangers, they face a challenge like never before. Luckily, help comes in the form of a mysterious Samurai visitor and his mentor.

Plot[]

After finishing shopping, Zion and Jack see a beatiful motorcycle, which Zion find out is Mentor Ji's when he appeared in front of them. Zion showed Jack through his tablet archive footage of his fights against the Nighloks alongside the Samurai Rangers so Jack called him but he was already too far gone. Meanwhile, Prince Vekar ā€‹ā€‹receives a more or less aggressive visit from Matacore, who in passing destroyed one or two X Borgs before briefly fighting Argus. The prince then states that the Earth will belong to them and that they will lead an assault from now on.

An army led by Vekar, with Argus and Matacore at his sides, beams down to the scene, only to be confronted by the Rangers. After quickly provoking them, they morph and all of the X Borgs and Bruisers are eliminated by them. They morph into the Mighty Morphin Rangers, but are no match for Matacore's swordsmanship. More X Borgs were sent so they morph into Mega Rangers and manage to beat them all again. Still having more fight in them, the Space Pirates Rangers morph into the Galaxy Rangers. Galaxy Blue charges toward Vekar while the other four latch on to Matacore, but Argus forces him to change back into Space Pirate Blue and a sword fight ensues. After being pummeled by Argus' attack, Zion feels frustrated again, like during his fight against Skatana. He remains speechless as Argus approaches him to slash him, but Space Pirate Red rushes to block the attack. Ewan then fires at the cyborg, throwing his sword out of his hand. Prince Vekar is wounded in the gunfire, forcing him, Argus and Matacore to retreat, much to the annoyance of Damaras and Levira. Back on his mothership, Vekar ā€‹ā€‹sends Matacore directly back to Earth in order to avenge his injury, healed by Levira.

After the battle, Ewan, Jack and Zion, went to Ernie's BrainFreeze to hang out and discuss a new tactic they could develop to defeat Matacore, when suddenly Jayden Shiba appears to help the Rangers. Zion is amazed to see the Red Samurai Ranger right next to them, calling him a legend. The legend then tells them that he knows who they are and that he saw them fight. He gave them the Double Disc and disappear without saying anything or warning. After shopping for lots of new clothes, the Hoyle Sisters show up and their older brother asked them where they were while they were trying to come up with a plan. After Ewan had his answer, Jack was about to ask them if they had seen Jayden in passing just when their morphers beeped, telling them that Matacore had returned. But from that moment, Ernie reappeared and saw neither Jayden nor the other teenagers.

When in the battle field, they fight first as civilians then they morph into the Squadron Rangers, Overdrive Rangers, the Wind Rangers, the Mega Rangers again, the Space Rangers, the Dino Rangers, the Zeo Rangers and the Time Force Rangers. The team then assume the forms of the Samurai Rangers to battle Matacore, with Blue Samurai Ranger using the Double Disc to fight with two Spin Swords before the pirates finish the monster off with the Pirate Slash attack.

Enlarged, Matacoreproceeds to destroy the city before overpowering the Legendary Wild Force Megazord. However, using the Samurai Keys, the Legendary Wild Force Megazord reforms into the Legendary Samurai Megazord. After taking down an entire platoon of Bruisers, the Legendary Samurai Megazord destroys Matacore.

At the end of the episode Mentor Ji and Jayden, having seen the whole Megazord fight, leave Harwood County to the comment of the girls saying Jayden is cute, which makes Jack jealous. Before, Ji asking Jayden how Ernie's ice cream is however he replies that he didn't get to taste it but that his ice cream looked much better than Mia's while both laugh.

Cast[]

Legendary Ranger Modes[]

  • All team Legendary Ranger Modes were not only Saban produced teams, but were also the first teams of their respective eras.
    • Power Rangers Mighty Morphin: Zordon Era
    • Power Rangers Lost Galaxy: Post-Zordon Era
    • Power Rangers Samurai: Saban Brands Era
      • At the same time, Ewan also becomes the Disney Era's first Red Ranger (the Red Wind Ranger), meaning he used the first Red Ranger power of each existing era in this episode.
      • Also, Zion and Julia have also used the powers of the first Blue and Yellow Rangers of each existing era in this episode as they became the Ninja Rangers in an earlier episode.
    • With the exception of Lost Galaxy and Megaforce, the Space Pirates Rangers transform into teams that were the first teams chronogically.
      • The Mighty Morphin Rangers were the first known team of Power Rangers on Earth.
      • The Samurai Rangers were the first PR team beginning centuries ago.
  • Jack morphs into the first black and the first green regular Rangers.
    • Another coincidence is that Jack also morphs into the last regular Green Ranger who happens to be the first Green Ranger of the Saban Brands Era.
  • The Mighty Morphin' Legendary Ranger Mode marks the first time all the Space Pirates Rangers morphs into all the core members of a team from the first Saban Era.

Elements/Homages to Power Rangers Samurai[]

  • Jayden's advice to the Space Pirate Rangers on how to beat Matacore is the same advice given to Mike in the Samurai episode, The Team Unites.
  • The battle between Zion and Argus is reminiscent of Jayden fighting Deker.
  • Much like the fifth episode of Samurai, both teams gain an additional formation for their Megazords (Samurai: Beetle Blaster Megazord, Space Pirates: Legendary Samurai Megazord).
  • Like the final battle of Samurai, a mentor to the current team of Rangers, in this episode Jayden, offers his assistance to the Space Pirates Rangers through a Power Disc, more specifically, the Double Disc.
  • Much like the final episode of Samurai, both episodes have a "Samurai" in their titles.
  • Matacoreā€™s arrival is similar to the typical arrivals of aboard Master Xandred's ship, with some violence breaking out, before being quelled by the arrival of a leader figure.
  • Just like Samurai, if the monster is going to be assisted by Bruisers in the giant battle, he is accompanied by three who are grown with them; in this episode a multitude of them arrive after he is grown which is similar to the giant Moogers.

Errors[]

  • When the Rangers morphed into the Mega Rangers, the Rangers were in their default mode. This is because the Gokaigers had transformed into the Dynamen to use the Super Dynamite against Matacore's Sentai counterpart.
  • Technically, the Double Disk is used incorrectly by Ewan in this episode, as instead of creating a copy of the Fire Smasher (as it did in "Samurai Forever" as well as being used correctly by Zion), it instead unleashes a fire attack. An in-show explanation can be seen as the double-disc simply doubling the Fire Smasher's output, as Ji did once claim that the disk is there to double the power.
  • When the Rangers transform from their Legendary Ranger Modes into Megaforce Legendary Mode, the background completely changes. Wen they also go from Mighty Morphin to Megaforce, Jackā€™s position is reversed with Zionā€™s just as Juliaā€™s position is reversed with Clareā€™s.

Notes[]

  • This is the last appearance of Space Pirate Red's Red Wind Ranger form.
  • The Legendary Ranger Modes adapted from episode 12 of Gokaiger included footage of Yellow Mask and Pink Flash, but did not include footage of Midorenger, DenziPink and Green Sai.
  • This episode marks the first mention of Vekar and Vrak's father, known only as, "The Emperor".
  • The scene were Jayden and Mentor Ji observe the Megazord fight is similar to Gokaiger's tribute to Gekiranger, the Sentai source of Power Rangers Jungle Fury, where the Legendary Red Ranger talks about the Rangers with his mentor. Ironically, the next episode is a tribute to Jungle Fury.
  • The Legendary Samurai Megazord's "Swordfish Slash" is in reference to the double blade of the Samurai Rangers' Swordfish Fencer Megazord.
  • Jayden mentions Mia in this episode, saying that he sure finds Ernie's yogurt more tasty than Mia's cooking.
  • There is flashbacks from the episodes "Day Off", "Trust Me", and "Samurai Forever".
  • This is the only episode where Vekar's suit is used in original Power Rangers Footage.
  • When Vekar lands, it skips the appearance of Kaoru Shiba, Lauren Shiba's counterpart, due to Gokaiger footage.
  • This episode marks the final unmorphed appearance of Jayden.
    • This is also the final appearance of Mentor Ji.
  • the footage in which the Gokaigers transformed into Dynaman were replaced by an original sequence of the Mega Rangers.
