Power Rangers Synchro Bug is a series created by A-a-achoo! in a collaboration with Tokoyami no Nietzsche.
It has a cyberpunk and insect theme, with the Zords being hybrids between insects and vehicles.
Inspired by Kamen Rider, this series introduces elements such as multiple Ranger teams that are all different sides, and the concept of Syncho-Drive, AKA the ability for some Rangers known as Synchro-Riders to absorb other Rangers within themselves.
Has a sequel, Power Rangers Linkin-Riders.
Plot[]
The series takes place in 2116 in Shin Moskau, an advanced city combining German, Russian, Italian and Japanese influences.
The Kuroboshi (neo-Russian for "Dark Star") Special Force, led by general Konstantin Sysoev, is an autonomous military force, not related to the police. usually takes care of taking down gang leaders, corrupt policemen, cyber-criminals and criminals who are "above the law". One year before, however, a rogue artificial intelligence known as Lucifer System had started taking over the network, creating the Goetia Hive Network, so the Kuroboshi was repurposed to fight Lucifer. The Kuroboshi, with the help of scientist Isamu "Sam" Hanselmann, tested a special Morpher called Synchro-Driver, which allows the user to absorb a digitized consciousness.
The story starts with Sofia working at a research center of the Space Exploration Department until said center is attacked by a Goetia, Decarabia. Synchro-Rider Nikolai, and the Red and Blue Rangers Alisa and Dimitri quickly intervene. They however only save a rookie scientist, Sofia Hoss, whose consciousness is quickly transplanted into a battle-type syntek body due to her decision to help with the fight. Isamu gives Sofia an Insect Morpher and she joins the Kuroboshi as the Green Ranger.
Characters[]
Rangers[]
The Rangers are not all the same team, but are divided into three teams: the main team includes Nikolai Sysoev and the red, blue and green rangers, while Axel Kinski and Akira Kinski are a secondary team acting as a rival to Nikolai, and Koharu and Bael are the Administrators of the Lucifer System, thus some of the main antagonists.

Main Team[]
- Nikolai Konstantinovich Sysoev: A 27-year-old fighter of the Kuroboshi Special Force, son of general Konstantin Sysoev. He's a bi goth with a passion for violent anime and video games, black metal, industrial and martial industrial music, Yukio Mishima books and fighting for the sake of his homeland. He doesn't have a tragic backstory, having instead lived well and having chosen by himself to dedicate his life to fighting and killing criminals. He was the first in the Synchro-Rider project, created one year prior to contrast the Lucifer System. He seems to be attracted to both Sofia and Akira.
- Alisa Elena Angelovna Kirliana: A 35-year-old member of the Blood Sword, coming from the future as a digitized consciousness, taking an empty Syntek body in the present and modifying it to look like her. Due to her skills as a spy and her strategic knowledge, Alisa is the de-facto leader of the group. Her true power is the Quantum Ranger, but she restricted her power. She was originally the girlfriend of her fellow Blood Sword member Mia Vittoria Comerio, and often reminisces about her while trying to find a new girlfriend. She soon makes friends with Koharu, being fascinated by the stories of spurned women that Koharu tells her, and they often spend time together, unaware of each other's identity at first but still carrying on their friendship once they know. It's a running gag that Alisa spurns Mitsunari's advances on her by saying "I'm an independent woman, I'm not the type to spend my life with a man", which is what she says to him when she shoots him to death.
- Dimitri Tadashivich Scherer: A 18-year-old orphan from the slums. His father Tadashi had been murdered by the Blazers member Axel Kinski during a robbery, when Dimitri was 14 and Ukyo was 10. In order to protect his younger brother Ukyo, he let the robber beat him up and did everything he could to stop him, but got shot in the chest. Taken in by the Kuroboshi, he was transplanted into a Syntek body due to the grave wounds he had gotten having made him unable to fight, and then he and Ukyo got adopted by Konstantin Sysoev, having decided to join the Kuroboshi Special Force, when it still was a special autonomous police force. Dimitri has kept wishing for revenge against Axel, which is what drives him to keep fighting. While Ukyo lives a normal life, no longer remembering the battle, Dimitri has never forgotten and wants to dedicate his life to fighting, both for the sake of earning money to give to the poor and to get revenge against Axel, even if four whole years have passed. As Axel and the Blazers, now renamed Spider Moths, were starting to make a name for themselves as exterminators of Goetia, Dimitri grew more and more filled with hatred towards them. He'll never actually be able to settle his grudge due to the Lucifer System being a more important problem, though Dimitri is by far the latest ranger to accept Axel in the team, never actually forgetting what Axel had done despite the fact that they're now allies.
- Sofia Kimitakevna Hoss: A 26-year-old girl with various interests such as nature, ancient traditions and legends, cars and motorcycles, space and astrophysics. She was a rookie scientist in the Shin Moskau Space Exploration Department, however an attack by the Lucifer System killed many of her superiors and almost killed her, forcing Sysoev to transplant her in a Syntek body. Once transplanted, she decided to join the Kuroboshi Special Force, believing to be forced to fight against the Lucifer System. Sofia is by far the "rookie" among the Rangers: while Nikolai, Alisa and Dimitri all were skilled combatants (Nikolai was trained by his father, Alisa had been a famed terrorist in the future, and Dimitri has grown up in the slums and was used to stealing and fighting), Sofia had never had any combat experience until being transplanted into a battle-type Syntek, making her the most inexperienced despite Dimitri being younger.

Allies[]
- Axel Borisovich Kinski: The White Moth Synchro-Rider. He and Akira start out as rivals to Nikolai, but later on they become part of the main team. Axel was originally a member of the Blazing Hawks, rivals to the Fangs of Steel, and had killed Dimitri's father Tadashi. After Akira came from the future, he built a Synchro-Driver for him, and made him stronger, even before the Kuroboshi could make one. Due to it, Axel became leader of the Blazing Hawks, renaming them Blazing Spiders, and rivaled with Zagan. Axel had nothing to do with the Kuroboshi, though he quickly started exterminating Goetia by himself.
- Akira/Akira Matsuovich Kinski: The Hollow Spider Ranger. Axel's descendant from the future, who returned to the past as a Syntek. He had created Lucifer as a weapon against the totalitarian World Government, but said AI went rogue and took over the entire earth, forcing him to travel back in time to prevent the future from ever happening. At first, he only wants to share his story with his ancestor, but later opts for an alliance with Nikolai. Despite his full name being Akira Matsuovich Kinski, he always goes by his first name only, believing he's not yet a Kinski.
- Isamu Nestorovich "Sam" Hanselmann: The scientist who invented the Synchro-Driver program. Sam is part of Bayreuth Corporation's science department, but does not have to report to Friedrich.
- Valerio Antoniovich Masucci/Beleth (Snake Goetia): A sushi-maker that is a close friend of Isamu. His sushi restaurant "Decima Mas" is a common meeting place for the rangers (and also for Koharu). He appears to want to continue his life as a normal person and not want to think of the Lucifer System. He has a passion for the model Ami Yamada and keeps posters of her everywhere. His real name is Beleth, and he knows much more than he appear to, being a former Network King of Goetia sealed inside a powerless syntek body after attempting rebellion against Lucifer (driven by envy towards his successor Bael). He often disguises as the Lost Dung Ranger, a comic relief unofficial ranger wearing a brown spandex suit with a helmet made of trash and driving a garbage compactor truck painted brown which he calls his "Zord". Later on, after Ami dies, he gets his powers restored by his seal is broken, his consciousness is transferred into a more combat-capable syntek body and has Sam build an actual brown ranger armor and Zord inspired by his Lost Dung Ranger, ultimately having his revenge against Bael in a duel that ends in him going kamikaze on his enemy, causing Lucifer to absorb both and complete his Belial body. His sin is Envy.
- Ami Minatovna Yamada/Amy (Butterfly Goetia): A model and idol, whom Valerio is obsessed with. She's in fact Amy, Beleth's former companion in the rebellion, who Beleth himself hid inside a non-battle syntek body by sacrificing part of his power in order to save her from being erased by Lucifer. Unlike Beleth, Amy does not become a ranger but dies and downloads herself into Beleth to give him the strength to break off from his seal and regain his combat capabilities. Due to her necessitating to die in order to save Beleth, Amy hatches a scheme to expose Friedrich Wagner as a King.
- Ukyo Tadashivich Scherer: Dimitri's younger brother. He's in a prestigious high school, and now lives a normal life, having forgotten everything about the robbery which led to his father's death (he was 10 at the time, while Dimitri was 14). He and Sofia end up becoming really good friends and spend a lot of time together, to the point Ukyo considers Sofia a big sister, despite him being 14 and she being 26.
- Kensuke "Ken" Kravchenko: Originally an important engineer of Bayreuth Corporation's military technology department, who has fallen in poverty after being fired and now works as an engineer for Kuroboshi alongside Sam. He had left his wife, who he had never loved, and his 3-year-old daughter Koharu, and remarried, forming another family. He cut all his ties with Koharu, refused to see her and, after finding out she would inherit his money instead of his children by second wife, he attempted to get rid of her and her mother by placing a bomb on their car, which killed Koharu's mother and left the girl paraplegic. Even then, his only words had been "Why didn't she die?". When Koharu became the Administrator of the Lucifer System, she immediately had one of her Goetia take control of Bayreuth and fire her father. Kensuke, worried that the one he never saw as his real daughter was attempting revenge on him, and paid the Blazing Spiders to guard him against the Goetia who were hunting him down under orders from the Administrator. Axel and Akira saved his life, but he's now filled with debts. He has redeemed himself and calls himself just "Ken", as using his true name Kensuke Kravchenko makes him think of the daughter he had ruined the life of.
- Francesca Yuichievna Sugita: A woman working as a weapon researcher who later on becomes Alisa's lesbian girlfriend.
- Spider Moths: Formerly a street gang called Blazers, rivaling with the Fangs of Steel. After Axel Kinski took over with the help of Akira, they became the Spider Moths, a parallel anti-Goetia force rivaling the Kuroboshi and not State-funded. Axel is their leader de iure, but Akira, acting as the main strategist and scientist of the group, is their de-facto leader. They are mostly anti-heroic at first and in some episodes send their mooks against the rangers and commit terrorism against military facilities (though they do not attack civilians), but they eventually stop doing terrorism and forge an alliance with the Kuroboshi.
- Axel Kinski
- Akira
- Spider Moths Troopers

Villains[]
- Goetia Hive Network
- Goetia Messiah
- Lucifer System: An AI created by Akira Kinski in 2376 in order to contrast the totalitarian world government. It went rogue and took over the entirety of the Earth, forcing Akira to send his consciousness back in time to prevent said future, connecting to his ancestor Axel. Lucifer followed Akira through time and started his conquest of the present, having already taken over part of the world by the time the plot starts and sending Goetia to attack Shin Moskau. It creates a special combat form called Belial created by absorbing all the Network Kings and later Bael, which evolves further into Belial Magnus (which is Megazord-sized). When Belial-Magnus is destroyed, a completely mind-broken Koharu uses the Lucifer system's sustained damage to Synchronize forcibly with Belial's remains, fully taking over the Lucifer System and imposing onto it her dream to create a world free of abuse by enslaving everyone under her will.
- Administrator and Royal Guard
- Administrator Koharu Kravchenko: Daughter of a rich engineer and a poor young woman who became a prostitute after being dumped, Koharu was never loved by her father, who left her and her mother when she was 3 and never came back. She was bullied at school due to her mother being a prostitute and her father being absent, which led her to self-harming. Her father soon found out about her and decided to get rid of her and her mother by rigging their car, which killed her mother and left Koharu paraplegic. Completely broken, she became a hikikomori and started self-harming until the Lucifer System gave her a way to escape her frailty and depression through transhumanism, so she decided to bond with Lucifer and become its human Administrator. She and the Rangers often meet each other, unaware of each other's identity. Lucifer gave her Bael, a Goetia acting as a "Royal Guard", who quickly became a supporting figure for her and made her overcome her frailty. Unlike many PR villains, Koharu stays evil specifically because Bael is for her what her parents and her schoolmates have never been. She and the Rangers often meet each other at the Decima Mas sushi, unaware of each other's true identities. She's shy around men aside from Bael (who she knows isn't a man) but likes talking to girls, especially Alisa (due to her lesbianism), and telling them stories about women who were spurned by men such as Dido and Medea (which make her think of her late mother). After her sanity fully slips due to the repeated defeats, she later forces the damaged Belial, the Lucifer System's Syntek body, into a synchronization, thus taking over the Lucifer system itself and becoming Synchro-Belial. As Synchro-Belial, Koharu (now completely mentally broken and wishing to create a world free of abuse by destroying everything) fights the Bug Lord Megazord as the Belial Ultrazord, and later, almost dead, fights the Rangers one last time in human form until Nikolai, synchronized with Quantum Alisa, finishes her off. Her last words are "sic, sic iuvat ire sub umbras" ("this, this is a very pleasant death", quoting Dido from the Aeneid who she sees as a spurned woman).
- Royal Guard Bael/Fausto Bellini: An AI inhabiting a syntek, created by Lucifer to act as a bodyguard for Koharu. Despite being obedient to his creator, Bael started developing actual emotions due to Koharu's affections for him. He often disguises as a human, calling himself Fausto Bellini, in order to spend time with Koharu and learn more about humanity.
- The Network Kings: The strongest Goetia, having human forms and directly obeying to the Administrator. Their true forms are naturally giant-sized, and they're the only enemies (aside from other Megazords) which are fought by using Megazords instead of individual Zords. Each one has a Deadly Sin:
- Paimon (Snail Goetia)/Friedrich Wagner: CEO of Bayreuth Corporation. He's an otaku characterized by weird tastes in fashion, referring to as "J-pop" and "kawaii" things such as Wagner, d'Annunzio, Nietzsche and Arno Breker, and has a passion for playing Wagner music on a piano (which he refers to as "J-popping"), which the Administrator likes but the other Kings do not. He's one of the most secretive Kings ever, being cold, calculative and ruthless and always thinking of a new strategy. Being skilled in manipulation, he made himself virtually untouchable by the law by bribing police officers. Whatever the Rangers do, Paimon is always prepared for. At first, Paimon is emotionless. as he's programmed to be, but the deaths of the other kings cause him to suffer and question if what he's doing is right and if the Rangers really were the evil inferior race he had thought them to be... Only he's too slothful to make a decision, can't bring himself to betray Lucifer, and instead chooses to fight Koharu and Bael just to get himself killed as he's fallen in despair, believing he has nowhere to go. He chose the human names of the other Kings from Wagner operas. His sin is Sloth.
- Purson (Peacock Goetia)/Keiko Lohengrin: A vain, smug woman who is the last King to be killed aside from Bael and Beleth. Believing herself to be superior to Valerio, she underestimates him, fights him as a human instead of using her true power, and is utterly trashed by his Dung Ranger form. Her sin is Pride.
- Asmodeus (Goat Goetia)/Mitsunari Tannhaeuser: He's technically the first Goetia ever seen, but his true identity as a Goetia King is only revealed later, until then, very few foreshadowing hints are dropped such as him mentioning that "he has an awful job". As Tannhaeuser, he pretends to be a camp-straight androgynous artist and idol singer who lusts after Alisa (who obviously doesn't give a shit about him) and, in a running gag, tries to ask her to model for paintings and photos and composes poems and songs dedicated to her. He does his job as a King well enough, but likes living as a normal person, fascinated by humans and their ability to feel love, and Alisa being "an independent woman who doesn't want to spend her life with a man" is what makes him so interested in her, whom he calls "his evanescent angel" (to the point that his last words are "my evanescent angel, come in my arms!"). He sees his Goetia form as terrible-looking and does not flaunt his powers at all. His sin is Lust.
- Vine (Lion Goetia): Not much is known about them, since Beleth had already killed them while rebelling against Lucifer. Their data is already part of Lucifer by the time the story starts. Their sin is supposed to be Wrath, as the flashback about Beleth's rebellion shows that they, when activating their berserk mode, were much stronger than Beleth, who had to use intelligent planning to outwit their raw strength.
- Balam (Toad Goetia): Not much is known about them, since Beleth had already killed them while rebelling against Lucifer. Their data is already part of Lucifer by the time the story starts. Their sin is supposed to be Greed, as their Goetia form is gold-plated (giving them an electric shield due to gold being a conductive material) and covered in gems.
- Zagan (Pig Goetia)/Keisuke Parsifal: The first King to be seen in Goetia form, being the ax-crazy leader of the biker gang Fangs of Steel who commits murders for pleasure and flaunts his power. His madness makes him hated amongst the very Network Kings he's a part of, causing them to send him to kill the Rangers just so that he would get himself killed. His sin is Gluttony.
- Goetia: The Monsters of the Week. There were 72 Goetia, but most of them have already been killed by Nikolai, Alisa and Dimitri prior to the story's start, by Beleth's rebellion or by Axel and Akira, or have assisted Beleth in said rebellion (and got subsequently killed by Lucifer and the Kings). Few Goetia survive. Like monsters of the week in Kamen Rider, the Goetia usually appear for two episodes instead of one (and never have giant forms during their first appearance), and have human forms. A Goetia can summon more than one GoetiaZord at the same time, but whenever a Goetia puts their body inside a GoetiaZord to make it complete, they trade the ability to control other GoetiaZords for a permanent power up to the GoetiaZord they're inside (so the other GoetiaZords automatically detonate). Astaroth exploits said ability by summoning three GoetiaZords, entering a fourth one and having all the previous three (which it no longer can control) destroy the city by self-detonating.
- Decarabia (Starfish Goetia)
- Andromalius (Dog Goetia)
- Ronove (Rat Goetia)
- Bune (Sheep Goetia)
- Sitri (Leech Goetia)
- Andras (Owl Goetia)
- Gremory (Spider Goetia) (becomes a Complete GoetiaZord)
- Bathin (Panther Goetia)
- Zepar and Vepar (Kabuto and Kuwagata Goetia) (merge into a Complete GoetiaZord)
- Nebiros (Cerberus Goetia)
- Forneus (Manta Goetia)
- Orobas (Horse Goetia)
- Astaroth (Bat Goetia) (becomes a Complete GoetiaZord)
- Gaap (Mermaid Goetia)
- Amon (Tiger Goetia) (becomes a Complete GoetiaZord)
- Goetia Messiah
- Fangs of Steel: A biker gang led by Zagan, who took over them after murdering their leader. They had been rivals of the Blazers even before they became Spider Moths.
- Fangs of Steel troopers
- Fangs of Steel troopers

Zords[]
Zord combat is much different than most PR seasons.
Due to the emphasis on rival/evil rangers (of which Bael and Koharu never actually redeem), this series has many oddities, such as a Ranger who never takes part in a Megazord, Megazords being used much less and very rarely against monsters of the week (Megazords are only used against other Megazords and Kings and with the rare Complete GoetiaZords, and the main Megazord debuts against Zagan) and a Zord being absorbed into a non-Zord villain counting as a Megazord.
Normal Goetia do not grow, but their giant-sized forms are giant mecha/drones called GoetiaZords, similar to Go-Busters (said GoetiaZords are teleported by the Goetia's data and are just empty suits of armor). Said Goetiazords have different modes: Blank GoetiaZords happen when the correspondent Goetia is outside them and keeps fighting the Rangers with the GoetiaZord active, while they're called Complete GoetiaZords when the Goetia's body enters inside the GoetiaZord in order to empower it and can only be damaged by Megazords, at the cost of dying permanently when the Complete GoetiaZord is killed. Blank GoetiaZords are fought by separate Zords, and very few normal Goetia become complete. Kings have no GoetiaZord, instead they're naturally giant-sized and can only be harmed by a Megazord.

Notes[]
- Since the series is set in Russia, and there are almost no Russian actors in all of Power Rangers, Japanese actors from Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are used instead in order to give the feeling of Russia as Europe and Asia at the same time.
- Nikolai Sysoev is named after a black metal singer, Gleb Sysoev from the band Ultar. Alisa Elena Kirliana is named after darkwave band Kirlian Camera and its singer Elena Alice Fossi.
- Alisa's trait of being a lesbian is also a reference to Elena Alice Fossi, who never discussed her orientation but had confessed about having had a crush on a woman.
- Elena herself was cast in the role of Alisa. It was her first time acting, as she's usually a darkwave singer.
- Silver Fish Train and Emperor Tortoise Tank are insects, not an actual fish and tortoise. They are a silverfish and a golden tortoise beetle.
- Racing car, submarine and helicopter were chosen as main zords to make a land-sea-sky trio that's a common trope in Ranger teams, but in a way that is not common (usually the blue is associated with the sea, the red with the sky and the yellow with earth. This time, red is sea, blue is sky and green is earth).
- Not having a yellow ranger was a decision caused by the red and green ranger both being female and Tokoyami no Nietzsche disliking having male yellow rangers (and in general preferring green and especially black instead of yellow and pink, often having black instead of red being the protagonist, or, in case red is the protagonist, black is the most lore-relevant character).
- Alternate universe versions of the Spacetime Rangers from spacetime appear in this story. Dimitri Scherer, Sofia Hoss, Axel Kinski and the main ally Sam Hanselmann are alternate counterparts of Brigitte Scherer, Greta Hoss, August Kinski and Anton Hanselmann. Valerio Masucci is named after Klaus Masucci from Spacetime, but he's not an alternate universe counterpart, being instead a sealed Goetia Network King.
- The Quantum Ranger, which is a color by itself in most PR, is a power up for the Red Ranger (or technically her true unrestrained power) in this series.
- Having an unofficial parodistic over-the-top Brown Ranger was a decision taken from Zyuohger's parodistic Pink Ranger, Mario Mori. Unlike Mori, however, the Brown Ranger actually turns into an official ranger once the seal on Beleth's consciousness is removed and he regains his fighting abilities (but his zord is still a dung beetle).
- The Synchro-Riders all have weapons which are "combinations":
- The Scorpion Gunchain is a scorpion claw-shaped gun with a chain ending in a metal spike, reminiscent of a scorpion's tail, attached to the handle. Nikolai wields it by shooting with the left hand while holding the spike in the right and whipping his enemies with it. When synchronizing, the chain detaches and combines with the other's weapon.
- The Moth Sniper Ax is a sniper rifle with a retractable blade hidden in the handle. Once said blade is extended, the rifle turns into an ax.
- The Silverfish Homing Parasite is a remote drone that can scan blood to track enemies and releases various types of poison or drug in the opponent's body.
- Balam is the only Network King that isn't shown suffering from his cardinal sin. Asmodeus' lust leads him to fall in love with a lesbian and be eternally spurned, Zagan's gluttony caused him to reveal he's a King and to not think, Paimon's sloth caused him to refuse to make a decision and instead fall into despair, Vine's wrath caused him to go berserk and be outwitted by Beleth, Beleth's envy towards Bael caused him to rebel against Lucifer and Purson's pride causes her to underestimate Beleth.
- It was a conscious decision to have two people with an awful backstory but having redeemed themselves, Akira and Ken, as allies, while their creations (Lucifer and Koharu) as villains.
- Zagan in his human form looks like Inosuke due to his gray pig-shaped helmet and twin blades. Nikolai apparently lampshades the resemblance by calling him "just a worthless scum who pretends to be a hero".
- Shin Rossiya is portrayed as a mix of Europe and Asia, just as real Russians are.
- They celebrate Hanami and White Day, they have school uniforms, they use Kanji writing, they bow a lot and do dogeza poses, they use Japanese/Russian honorifics such as -sama and -sempai, they have idol groups with contractual purity, they reference the Red String of Fate, and they are mostly Shinto like Russians and Japanese, while Catholics are completely absent.
- However, as Shin Rossiya is also inspired by Europe (especially Italy), it's got very European elements such as cars driving to the right, the number 17 being seen as unlucky (it's 4 in Japan), people having huge family dinners on Christmas Eve and 31st January, including a reference to "tortellini" (an Italian dish similar to small pork gyoza in a broth) being eaten on Christmas day, and "cotechino" with lentils being eaten on January 31st (meanwhile, Russians and Japanese usually spend Christmas with their romantic date), people having maturity exams at the end of high school (maturity exams don't exist in Asian countries such as Russia and Japan), Italian gestures such as the middle finger and the "what do you want" gesture, Kamen Rider being virtually unknown (Kamen Rider is virtually unknown in Italy, meanwhile the Russians and Japanese see KR as a toyetic franchise for kids), opera being popular, people being usually on a first-name basis rather than a last-name basis (in Russia and Japan it's common to call each other by last name, in Italy people use the first name), and references to European card games virtually unknown in Japan such as Tressette.

Lyrics:
A star shines through the future and the past
May your heart follow it
Standing strong to protect your homeland and the life
Of the people that made you what you are
(Synchronize! Synchronize! Synchronize! Synchronize!)
Rise against the virtual demons oppressing your soul
Take up arms and synchronize to strengthen your resolve
Be as one to overcome the heavens, hack through the illusion
Bug in the network of fate, the revolution!
