Jason Lee Scott (October 20, 1978 - 2023 (as a human), January 1, 2024 - present (as a Morphin Master)) was the first Red Ranger of the 'modern era', officially named as such, as well as the leader of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

He later returned in Power Rangers Zeo to become the second Gold Ranger of the Zeo Rangers, temporarily receiving those powers from Trey of Triforia.

Jason is the sixth longest-serving Ranger overall behind Tommy Oliver, Billy Cranston, Adam Park, Kimberly Hart, and Rocky DeSantos.

Retroactively, Jason is also referred to as the Mighty Morphin Red Ranger or Red Mighty Morphin Ranger, as well as Zeo Gold Ranger or Gold Zeo Ranger, though these are in reference to the show, as opposed to proper labels.

In Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Jason also returned helping the Turbo Rangers against Divatox, her crew and Maligore.

Many years later, Jason returns in Power Rangers Wild Force, as part of a special mission with the Veteran Red Rangers against the remnants of the Machine Empire.

During the events of Power Rangers Beast Morphers Season 2, Jason returns as leader of the Legendary Dino Rangers army, helping the Grid Battleforce Rangers against Goldar Maximus and his Army of Foot Soldiers.

Several years later, having formed his own family, Jason returned in Power Rangers: Future Force as part of a team of time-traveling Future Rangers to help an alternate Zordon and his Forces defeat the Evil Space Aliens of his time.

In Power Rangers Back to Action, upon being killed in a battle with his arch-enemy Goldar, Jason is resurrected as Master Red's (who had been promoted to a Grandmaster as a reward for helping an alternate version of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers prevent Dark Master from acquiring the Power Eggs) successor as both the Red Morphin Master and leader of Morphin Masters. With his mortal life over, Jason left Earth to join his fellow Morphin Masters in the Morphin Grid. Jason and a group of Morphin Masters and Grandmasters led by Tommy return to rebuild the original Power Chamber as the Morphin Nexus and resurrect Zordon to guide his former teammates one last time.

History[]

Before becoming a Ranger[]

Jason used to be a bully. It is revealed that when Jason was young, he was a bully like Bulk and Skull, one time even going so far as to break a bow and arrow made by a child much younger than him. Fortunately, Jason vowed to change his ways and was determined to become a better person. He started taking Karate classes. Mighty Morphin Era[]

Jason Chosen

Zordon chooses Jason to be the Red Ranger.

Like his fellow future Rangers, he lived in the city of Angel Grove and attended Angel Grove High School. Jason taught a martial arts class at Ernie's Juice Bar and Gym, a place that Jason and his friends like to work out and hang out in. One fateful day, as Jason finished conducting one of his classes and was chatting with his best friends, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly, an earthquake began across Angel Grove. As Ernie's emptied out, Jason and his friends felt themselves being lifted and teleported along in streams of colored lights. They landed in a pile on top of each other in a strange place. As Jason and the others examined their surroundings, a robot by the name of Alpha 5 approached them. As Jason was taking this all in, an even more strange sight awaited them. In an energy tube of blue light, was a huge floating head, who introduced itself as Zordon and explained that Jason and the others had been chosen by him to fight evil in the form of Rita Repulsa. In order to do so, Zordon said he would grant the five teens the power to become a fighting force known as the Power Rangers. The further explanation of dinosaur Zords and Power Morphers threw Zack and the others off, except for Jason. As Zack was leading the group out, Jason lingered; he was a natural-born leader and the idea of him being a sort of modern-day hero appealed to him greatly. Very reluctantly, Jason followed his friends out of the Command Center.

MMPR1 Jason Morphing

Once outside the building, Jason tried to persuade the others that maybe they should give this a shot. They didn't get too far. Before Jason's eyes, a group of very strange beings were standing before him and the others. The beings were Putties - Rita's evil henchmen. At first, Jason and the others fought with all their might, but they were swiftly defeated. Realizing they didn't have the strength to defeat the Putties, Jason encouraged everyone to use their Power Morphers. Jason morphed into the Red Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger for the first time. With these new powers, Jason and the other Rangers made quick work of the Putties. When Rita unleashed her second-in-command Goldar on Angel Grove, Jason led the other Rangers in summoning their Zords and combining them into the Megazord, which they used to successfully force Goldar into retreating. Elated with their victory, the went back into the Command Center. Unable to suppress the grin on his face, Jason quickly told Zordon that he was more than willing to continue defending the world from evil. Thus, Jason became the leader of the Power Rangers and a formidable force of good against evil. Day of the Dumpster

When they are not saving the world, teenagers with attitudes chosen by Zordon gather at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Trini updates Alpha 5 with the language of the year 1993. Far away, Dr. Carver and Dr. Kenyon discover a new civilization and the largest statue ever built in ancient America. Unintentionally, Dr. Carver activates the terrible cross between monster and robot that attacks the excavation site. Back at the Youth Center, Billy creates a device with internet access when everyone sees the attack on TV. In the territory of the attack, summoning the Dinozords, the Power Rangers fight against a terrible monster. Struck by the lightning of the stone giant, the Rangers lose communication with Zordon and have their pieces exchanged makes it difficult in battle. With the help of Alpha 5, the exchange effect was reversed and the Rangers, winning the battle and returning the giant to its location. Rita Repulsa's Attitude Adjustment

As a Ranger, Jason's most defining character trait is his desire to be a good leader. When anything goes wrong, Jason is the first of the team to attempt to correct it. Whenever anyone is in danger, Jason is always first to rally the other rangers to save them. In Green With Evil, Jason was the only Ranger who refused to give up when Rita and the Green Ranger seemed to gain the upper hand. Jason and his friends in the form of Power Rangers defeat Korruptor using Dino Megazord. Going Green

However, his most defining characteristic is also his greatest weakness. Much more so than any other red ranger that has come since him, Jason will beat himself up over the slightest failure. For a long time, he blamed himself for allowing Tommy to lose his green ranger powers; in the episode Missing Green, when his best friend, Zack, tried to explain that it wasn't his fault, Jason would have none of it, insisting he "should have done something." This self-blame continued all the way into Zeo, where he at one point lamented that he let Tommy down once before (referencing his failure to retrieve the Green Candle that zapped Tommy's powers) and would not let it happen again.

The villains would often exploit this weakness in an attempt to gain a psychological advantage over Jason. For example, in the episode Island of Illusion, Part II, Goldar told Jason that, if he were a "real leader," he would have saved his team already. This almost worked, as Jason began to doubt himself, which triggered the Island's ability to make its inhabitants disappear, and it would have worked were it not for the help of a native of the Island, Quagmire, who hated Rita as much as the Rangers and assisted the Rangers. Another example of villains targeting this weakness came in the Season 2 episode Missing Green; after eavesdropping on the aforementioned conversation between Jason and Zack, Zedd conspired to steal the other rangers' powers in an attempt to break Jason's spirit even further, a talk that almost worked were it not for Zordon's pep talk to Jason about his leadership skills.

Although a Ranger, Jason still kept up with the life he had prior to becoming a Ranger. Jason got involved in all the extra school activities that went on in Angel Grove as well as activities outside of school: food fairs, carnivals, dances, insect collecting, planting trees in the park, burying a time capsule, acting in school plays, and even finding stray animals a home.

Jason still taught his martial arts classes. He even managed to beat a weight lifting record set by Bulk, which greatly angered Bulk. During this time, not only did Jason have to contend with Rita, but with Bulk and Skull as well. Most especially with Bulk, who seemed to take great joy in trying to put Jason down. They had many confrontations with usually Bulk on the losing side. Bulk and Skull also enjoyed tormenting Billy. Jason offered to teach Billy martial arts and Billy took Jason up on his offer. Jason gave Billy as much encouragement as he could to bolster up Billy's self-confidence.

Jason stayed active in many ways. Playing volleyball, football, basketball, mountain biking, rope climbing, broomball, and scuba diving (where Jason was also a certified instructor). Jason was always willing to try new things. Helping his team win the Noble Lion trophy was a great pleasure, especially since Bulk and Skull were on the opposite team. Although trying to communicate in sign language was more difficult than what he though as he unintentionally said something silly to a hearing-impaired girl. Environmentally conscious, Jason even joined a clean-up club set up by Trini and pitched in picking up trash.

Jason was very close and protective of his fellow Rangers, especially Zack. Jason, along with the other Rangers, had great fun planning Zack's surprise birthday party. Zack and Jason worked out together frequently. Zack was always telling Jason about his frustrations at trying to win over the beautiful Angela. Jason sympathized, but couldn't offer much advice. Although a very good looking man, Jason hadn't found himself in Zack's position. He hadn't found the girl of his dreams yet; Jason was however very protective of Kimberly and Trini. Although they are beautiful girls, he cared for them as a brother.

Jason had a soft spot for kids. He enjoyed taking his cousin Jeremy fishing and showing him some karate moves. Jason and Zack even coached a young boy into becoming a better soccer player.

Green Ranger Arc[]

In the cockpit

Jason at the Command of the Megazord.

Although Jason had many battles with Rita Repulsa's various monsters, the Rangers' biggest challenge awaited ahead. While helping Billy clean the Rad Bug, Jason and the others were suddenly contacted by Alpha, but were unable to hear him due interference in their communicators and soon learned that the teleporter was also nonfunctional. With Trini pointing out that something was definitely wrong, Jason suggested that they all head to the Command Center at once. At Billy's suggestion, the Rangers used the Rad Bug to make their way to the Command Center. Upon arrival, Jason and the others were shocked to find the Command Center destroyed and Zordon missing. They managed to find Alpha, who was acting erratically and was unable to converse with the Rangers. Billy deduced that someone must've put a computer virus into Alpha's programming and is able to remove it, restoring Alpha back to normal. Asking what happened to the Command Center, Alpha was unable to remember and was barely able to contact them before shutting down. Jason pointed out that someone had obviously broken in, although Trini stated that nobody could've gotten in without a Power Coin. They were then forced into action after witnessing Goldar through the Viewing Globe.

Another Ranger, colored green, appeared on the scene, but this Green Ranger was working for Rita. In their first battle, the Green Ranger managed to infiltrate and sabotage the Megazord after the team fought an enlarged Goldar. Ejected from the Megazord, Jason and his team were then attacked by the evil Green Ranger and were quickly outmatched. Jason, wanting to protect his wounded friends, challenged and fought the Green Ranger in single combat, but again was quickly defeated by the Green Ranger, who finished the fight with a green energy blast. Jason was placed in great danger when the Green Ranger transported him to the Dark Dimension. There Jason faced off against Goldar. Narrowly escaping damage from Goldar's sword, Jason had to be quick on his feet, for all he had was his martial arts skills as his Morpher was in Goldar's hands. Things changed when the Green Ranger stepped in for Goldar. Thankfully, the other Rangers transported Jason back to the Command Center just before Green Ranger could kill him with the Sword of Darkness. His heart still pounding, Jason was still tense until he realized he was back. He quickly recovered and commanded the Megazord against Goldar, Scorpina, and a giant Green Ranger. However, it was all part of a trap laid out by Rita, as she caused a solar eclipse that cut off the Megazord's power supply. Ultimately, the Rangers were forced to ditch the Megazord as it received heavy damage and then fell into the Earth's molten core. This defeat deeply upset Jason and the other Rangers, who all felt that they had lost a part of themselves with their Zords now gone.

Back at the Command Center, Jason tried to raise morale among the other Rangers, who were considering on giving up entirely now that both Zordon and the Zords were gone. Alpha, who was also set on not giving up, told that Rangers that he would not accept them submitting to defeat and asked Billy of what chance they had of restoring Zordon, for which the latter responded that there was the possibility of restoring their mentor was less than ten percent, further decreasing morale among the Rangers. Jason, unwilling to let his team give up, tried to convince them to stay as the smallest chance of victory was enough reason to keep fighting, although Zack countered by saying that the Green Ranger was Rita's trump card against them and by playing it she had won. Eventually, Alpha was able to uncover the Green Ranger's true identity, which to Jason's shock turned out to be Tommy Oliver. Tommy had been a worthy opponent at a Karate match from earlier and was the very last person Jason expected to be the Green Ranger.

MMPR Duel JasonvsTommy

Jason duels Tommy, shortly before destroying the Sword of Darkness.

As Jason and the others fit in the pieces of what had been happening, another battle loomed when Tommy summoned his own Zord, the Dragonzord, to attack Angel Grove. Thankfully, Zordon finally returned (thanks to Alpha's efforts) and revived the Megazord, which the Rangers used to stop the Dragonzord's rampage. Jason went down and fought Tommy in a final battle, but was still outmatched due to Tommy's Dragon Shield. However, Jason ultimately won when he hurled his charged-up Power Sword at Tommy, disarming his opponent and knocking him to the ground. Jason then immediately used his Blade Blaster to destroy the Sword of Darkness, breaking Rita's evil spell over Tommy. As Tommy slowly rose to his feet, Jason was the first to offer him friendship and a place on the Ranger team. Now the team of five had turned into six and the Rangers were more powerful than ever. Green with Evil

Jason and Tommy were always trying to upstage each other. Especially across the Karate mat; neither one was sure how to cooperate with the other. Zordon wisely sent them on a mission together to acquire a new weapon. Forced to work together or fail the mission, Jason and Tommy realized they could get a lot more accomplished if they worked together. From that point on, Jason and Tommy became very close friends as they battled the forces of evil together.

When Rita threatened Tommy's powers via the Green Candle, Jason would enter the Dark Dimension again to try to save Tommy from losing his powers.

But once again, Goldar was waiting for him and Jason was unable to retrieve the candle. Jason felt a deep sense of frustration as Zack led him out of the Dimension, but Jason needed to save Tommy from Rita's monster. Zordon came up with a way to defeat Rita from obtaining the Green Ranger's powers, he would have to give his Power Coin to one of the Rangers with a strong link to the Morphing Grid. Tommy passed his coin onto Jason. Jason felt the power surge through his body, and the Dragon Shield and Dragon Dagger transferred to him. He was unable to help Tommy from losing his powers, but he would take good care of them and the Dragonzord. The Green Candle

Red Ranger with Dragon Dagger Shield

Jason was also close to his family. His parents meant everything to him. In another of Rita's plots, the citizens of Angel Grove - along with the Rangers' parents - disappeared. The only way to retrieve them was to give Goldar their Power Coins. With Goldar taunting them, Jason and the others reluctantly gave him their power coins. Jason shuddered as he felt his power leave him. And then the worst part of all, Goldar and Rita had no intention of returning the Rangers' parents. Feeling betrayed and foolish for believing in Rita, the Rangers returned to the Command Center. There was still hope, as Jason revealed his own deception: though he gave up his Tyrannosaurus Coin, he secretly kept Tommy's Dragon Coin. Zordon enlisted Tommy's help and restored Tommy's powers on a limited basis. Tommy was able to retrieve the Rangers' Power Coins and the team was back in action. Jason was very happy when his parents were released and his old teammate was able to come back as a Ranger. Return of an Old Friend

The Arrival of Lord Zedd[]

A new form of evil appeared, presenting a new challenge to the Rangers. Lord Zedd put Rita back into a dumpster and sent her off into space, and with his stronger Putties and monsters, he gave the Rangers one tough battle after another. Jason, however, was the first to discover Zedd's Putties' weakness of hitting the "Z" on their chests. The Rangers needed stronger powers and with much difficulty, Jason and the others fought hard to gain them. All the Rangers, except for Tommy, were bestowed with more powerful Zords, which combined into the Thunder Megazord. Much to Jason's amusement, Bulk and Skull were now on the search for the true identity of the Power Rangers. The Mutiny

Eventually, Zedd struck a hard blow on the Rangers by draining Tommy's Green Ranger powers for good. Jason felt terrible for his friend and really missed having him on the team. More than that, though, he personally blamed himself for not retrieving the Green Candle in time to save Tommy's powers. Preying on Jason's remorse, Zedd had devised candles for the rest of the Rangers that were capable of draining their powers as well. He then captured Billy, Kimberly, Trini, and Zack and started draining them of their powers. As with the Green Candle, being closer to the candles drained their powers faster. Watching his friends on the Viewing Globe, Jason vowed that he would not lose the rest of his team. Jason ultimately came through and restored his team's powers. Zordon later praised Jason for once again proving himself worthy as the Rangers' leader and then showed him Tommy on the Viewing Globe. As Jason watched Tommy write a letter to him, Tommy stated that he didn't place any blame on Jason for what happened to his powers. With a burden lifted from his shoulders, Jason was able to continue leading his team to their various battles. He was also able to win a martial arts competition called the Golden Pipe Tournament, and he dedicated his new trophy to Tommy. Missing Green

The White Ranger[]

When dealing with a monster and having no contact from Zordon or Alpha, Jason sent Billy to discover the source of their silence. Billy stumbled onto the fact that Zordon and Alpha were making another Ranger. Although Rangers were on board with additional help, this left Kimberly, Trini, and Zack uneasy as the Rangers were a close-knit group and having someone else step in was not something the Rangers wanted, even thinking Tommy should have been given these powers. Jason concurred with Billy that, no matter who this new person was, they needed a new Ranger on the team. In the Command Center, Jason and the others watched a body surrounded by white light descend. With great anticipation, Jason watched the White Ranger remove his helmet. Much to his surprise and happiness, it was Tommy. Tommy was the White Ranger and the new leader of the team. Jason very graciously let the mantle of leadership go from his shoulders and onto Tommy's, becoming the new second-in-command. White Light

The Peace Conference[]

Zack Leaves

Jason and Zack moments before the Power Transfer

Things were changing for the original team. A peace conference was coming up and three students from Angel Grove were to be selected. Much to his amazement, Jason, along with Zack and Trini, were selected to go. At first, they were not sure if they should go due to their Ranger duties, but Zordon knew the trio would be a big help at the peace conference. Zordon selected three new Rangers. They turned out to be Rocky, Adam and Aisha, three new students who had become good friends of the Rangers and already knew their secret. Jason's last Ranger mission was to get a sword that would allow his powers to be transferred. With Zordon's approval, Jason transferred his powers onto Rocky. And with Zordon's blessing, Jason, Zack, and Trini left for the Peace Conference. The Power Transfer

Jason Gold

Jason receives the Gold Ranger's powers.

When Trey of Triforia crash-landed on Aquitar, he was injured and split into his three forms of Wisdom, Courage, and Heart. Because of this, he was unable to control the Gold Ranger powers and could not again until his three forms were able to rejoin as one, and if the powers were not transferred during that time, the powers would be lost for good. The Alien Rangers sent Trey to Earth, where Billy attempted to take in the powers himself, but his body rejected them (due to his body unintentionally absorbing negative energy from the destruction of the Command Center). So instead, Tommy considered Jason for the job, and later found Jason and brought him to the Power Chamber, while Jason was disguised with a trench-coat, sunglasses and a bandanna. On their way to the Chamber, however, they were attacked by the Machine Empire's Cogs but were able to get close enough to teleport to the Power Chamber, where Jason revealed himself and the powers were transferred and entrusted to him by Trey. Jason thus became the second Gold Zeo Ranger, wielding the Golden Power Staff. Unbeknownst at first to Jason, his successor, Rocky had felt himself being left out and being replaced by the Ranger he replaced. When Rocky tried to take on King Mondo himself, Jason and the others came to help in time, and Jason assured Rocky that not only was he a valued teammate, he was Jason's friend. A Golden Homecoming

When Tommy was brainwashed by Prince Gasket, he thought that he was the true King of the Machine Empire. The Machine Empire was able to trick Jason into trying to help Tommy, which teleported him to an arena where Tommy was waiting. There, Gasket convinced Tommy to fight Jason, and Jason's attempts to bring Tommy's memory back failed. Jason was barely able to defend himself from Tommy but did not attack him, since he didn't want to hurt him in the process. When they failed to stop him in combat, Jason and the other Zeo Rangers powered down to show their faces and convinced Tommy they were his friends. They succeeded and were able to escape home. King for a Day

Jason was surprised when Billy appeared as an old man, aging rapidly due to a defect from his regenerator. Jason met the Alien Rangers of Aquitar for the first time when they appeared and tried to help Billy, but even their attempts failed. It was decided that Billy needed to go to Aquitar to receive the treatments he needed to restore his youth. Standing alone, Jason hoped that the Alien Rangers could help Billy, as he left for Aquitar. When the team returned from another battle, they discovered that Billy had regained his youth but that he wasn't coming back, due to him falling in love. Jason and the others stated that they'd miss him. Rangers of Two Worlds

HZ2

Jason after his Gold Ranger powers are weakening.

Later, Jason and the Rangers came to the realization that his powers were going away, along with his life, for the Gold Ranger powers were meant for Triforian physiology, not Earth human. As he tried to run from Cogs, his power was deteriorating as he wore himself out. Luckily for him, Zedd and Rita confronted Mondo and his Machine Empire on-site, leading to a brawl between the two that gave Jason time to escape. He came to the Juice Bar and collapsed from exhaustion, and was taken to the Power Chamber where he was analyzed. There, it was realized that if Trey did not return to normal and his powers were not reclaimed, they would be lost forever, taking Jason's life in the process. The Rangers took Jason to the site where the three Treys could reunite after a beam shot from Earth bounced onto Aquitar, Triforia, and then back to Earth, as Jason held up his staff. The powers were successfully reclaimed, and Jason was saved.

Jason later was saddened since he had to give up his powers. He was comforted by Tommy after contemplating on his own, which made Jason realize that there was more to life than saving the world. He spotted Emily and joined her on a walk at the beach, leaving the Power Rangers once more. Good as Gold

Jason and Kim after being captured by Divatox.

Some time after defeating King Mondo, Jason decided to settle down in Angel Grove once again. There, he was regularly teaching martial arts again and scuba diving, though his relationship with Emily after the events of "Power Rangers Zeo" ended in heartbreak. When Kimberly, whose unnamed boyfriend had left her for another woman, returned to Angel Grove to surprise the Power Teens and help in a charity event for the children's shelter, apparently invited to help by Jason, the two ex-Rangers spent some time together and bonded over their mutual heartbreak, even briefly began dating before ultimately deciding that they were better off as friends as they didn't have any real romantic feelings for each other and were just projecting their shared feelings of heartbreak.

After some work, the two decided to relax and went scuba diving together. While they were exploring the ocean, the two were captured by an evil space pirate named Divatox and her crew, along with Bulk and Skull, to the surprise of Jason and Kimberly. With that in mind, Jason created a plan and was able to assist Kimberly, Bulk, and Skull in escaping the ship, after he found a portal and was able to open it. However, he was unable to escape and remained in the ship.

Jason was shackled and covered by a cloak and was taken to the island of Muiranthias. To his disappointment, Kimberly had been successfully recaptured as well.

Despite the Rangers' best efforts to save their friends, Jason and Kimberly were ultimately lowered into the volcano by Rygog, much to the pleasure of Divatox. With the sacrifice complete.

Kimberly and Jason reappeared in a burst of flames onto the volcano's edge, both under the control of Maligore and with their eyes glowing red. After snapping their handcuffs with their bare hands, the two evil ex-Rangers followed Divatox's command to destroy the intruders and they began to assault the Rangers. Jason greets his old teammate and friend, Tommy.

After Jason had been inactive as a Ranger for a few years, he was called on by his old friend Tommy, along with eight other Red Rangers on Earth. The Rangers traveled to the NASADA headquarters, where they grouped together and were informed of their mission. Jason, however, was late. Tommy stated that he doubted Jason would show up, but Cole Evans heard the sound of a motorcycle and saw Jason riding on a motorcycle. He joined the rest of the Red Rangers on the Astro Megaship Mark II, as they discussed the threat that the remnant of the Machine Empire posed. Jason remembered Lord Zedd's old Zord Serpentera, since he had faced it before during his last mission as the Red Ranger, and he commented that if the Machine Empire obtained the Zord, it would have enough power to destroy Earth.

Eight Red Rangers vs the Machine Empire

Jason and the Red Rangers go to attack the Cogs.

The team traveled to the Moon and were able to dock the Megaship without detection, giving them the element of surprise when they intruded the Machine Empire lunar base. Jason mocked General Venjix, the leader of the remnant, about missing King Mondo, before the Red Rangers engaged in battle against the Cogs. Jason displayed his lasting acrobatics and karate skill, demonstrating he still had the power within him. Once the Rangers were able to defeat the Cogs, they joined Cole, who had run after Venjix and the other generals, outside. They also met up with Leo and Aurico, who had arrived from their worlds, Mirinoi and Aquitar. When all ten Red Rangers were lined up, Jason led them into their respective morphing sequence, himself morphing into the Red Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger once again.

He then showed off his prowess and experience, while referring to Cole as "rookie" in the process, by easily overwhelming and nearly defeating Venjix. He then allowed Cole, the "newbie", to finish off Venjix with a special attack. However, Venjix was able to get away by fending off the veteran and rookie Rangers with a blast and boarding Serpentera.

Venjix then took off with the Zord, preparing to leave the Moon to destroy the Earth. Jason suggested that the team of Rangers return to the Megaship to stop Serpentera, but Carter knew that they had to stop the Zord before it left the moon. With this, Cole boarded his Wild Force Rider and was able to ultimately destroy Serpentera from the inside, killing Venjix in the process. After the display, Jason admitted he was impressed by Cole's antics. The team was then able to return to Earth, where they said their goodbyes. After Cole stated that Tommy was the greatest Ranger ever, the other Red Rangers disagreed jokingly. Jason stated that he was the one doing all the work while Tommy hit on Kimberly at the Juice Bar. The two met up with the fallen Rangers and after re-empowering them, Jason recruited the Dino Charge team to lead a frontal assault while the Grid Battleforce team attacked from behind. Once & Always[]

Tommy Oliver In Once And Always

Jason reunited with his old team.

In 2022, he, Kimberly and Tommy are recruited back to Power Ranger status after Rita Repulsa returns in a new robotic body, fighting her and her army of Putty Patrollers and witnessing the death of Trini Kwan, while Robo-Rita then retreats to the Dark Dimension, the Rangers mourn the loss of Trini.

Shrunken Rangers (1)

Jason along with Kimberly and Tommy are captured by Robo Rita.

One year later, Jason was present at Trini's grave with Tommy, Kimberly and Billy after they attempt to pay their respects to Trini Kwan at Angel Grove Cemetery. When Robo-Rita returned with Robo-Snizzard and Robo-Minotaur, they quickly morphed but were overpowered by Snizzard's new power which incapacitated them and enabled Rita to miniaturize and capture all but Billy and Zack. With their powers being used, the machine will slowly drain their energy in Robo-Rita's time device. Rocky is recruited to reclaim the power of the Mighty Morphin Red Ranger, using a Proxy version of Jason's Tyrannosaurus Coin.

In the end, they are saved thanks to Trini's daughter Minh Kwan, and the remaining Mighty Morphin Rangers, at which point Aisha and Adam take the shrunken Rangers to Aquitar to get them turned back to normal. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always

Future Force[]

"I'm in. Now who else is going?"
―Jason to Billy[src]

Sometime later, he, Tommy, and Kimberly return from Aquitar to find that their old friend Ernie had died and left to Jason, Tommy, and Zack the Youth Center, which Ernie had recently bought back from the people who owned it during "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always", due to the three of them having obtained college business degrees. Jason is saddened because he wasn't even able to attend his old friend's funeral because he was recovering on Aquitar at the time. Along with Zack, Billy, Kimberly, Tommy, Rocky, Adam, Aisha, Kat, Tanya, Justin, T.J., Carlos, Ashley, Cassie, Andros, Zhane, Karone, Minh and Zordon's son, Zoltar, Jason attended a 25th anniversary memorial service at the ruins of the old Power Chamber to commemorate Zordon's memory.

After paying their respects, Jason, Zack, Billy, Kimberly, Tommy, Rocky, Adam, Aisha, Kat, Andros, Karone, Minh, and Zoltar head back to the Command Center built beneath Cranston Technologies, where Billy briefs everyone on his plan to travel back in time using the time machine he built out of the original Rad Bug to prevent Zordon's death and give him a device called the Universal Purifier to ensure that Zordon's sacrifice would be unnecessary. Billy then asks for four volunteers, as Tommy had already volunteered before the briefing. Jason is the first to volunteer, followed shortly by Kimberly, Andros, and Zoltar. They five then travel back in time in the Rad Bug, which malfunctions, sending them back in time to an unknown point in time.

After Tommy tentatively identifies the time period as the late Neolithic Era based on the wild life, Jason spots a mysterious spacecraft. The five are soon teleported aboard the spacecraft. Upon arriving on what appears to be the alien craft's bridge, the five are surprised to meet Zordon, who has not been trapped in a time warp yet. Zordon is alarmed by the means that they traveled back in time because unstable time machines could cause dangerous disruptions to the space-time continuum just by being used but is none-the-less impressed that their friend could build a working one as very few alien civilizations are technologically advanced enough to build them. Zordon then welcomes them aboard his spaceship, the Starcarrier, and introduces them to his elite soldiers Trey of Triforia, Zorion, and Alpha 1 (who is also his assistant). Zordon urges them to stay aboard the Starcarrier and avoid interacting with the locals of planet Earth at that time to prevent disrupting the timeline unnecessarily while Alpha 1 works on fixing any possible flaws in their time machine's designs to prevent disruptions.

Just as the five are settling in and planning their next move, they are attacked by Goldar, Silverback, Darkonda (who along with Silverback, Jason fails to recognize though unlike Silverback Andros is able to identify as Darkonda), Scorpina, Mordant (who Zoltar mentions having fought before), and a large number of Putty Patrollers. Jason, Kimberly, Tommy, Zoltar, and Andros morph into the Red, Pink, Green, and Gray Rangers and Red Space Ranger to fight them. However, wracked with self-doubt following his capture by Robo-Rita, Jason and his friends are less effective then usual and Goldar springs an ambush involving Knasty Knight and Eye Guy. The five are captured and taken to the Dark Dimension where Goldar lets it slip that Lord Zedd himself is aware of them and ordered there capture in hopes that they may be of use to his plans. Fortunately, Zordon arrives with Trey and Zorion to rescue them.

Zordon, sensing the doubts of Jason and his friends, reminds them of why they were chosen by his counterpart in the first place, restoring their self-confidence. Zordon reveals that Rita Repulsa alone was winning the war with Zordon and his forces and that he was planning to imprison her in a dumpster but now worries that Lord Zedd's presence on the moon could complicate this plan. Feeling guilty that their arrival somehow attracted Zedd's attention, Jason, along with Kimberly, Tommy, Zoltar, and Andros, volunteer to lead an attack on the Moon Palace to keep Zedd buisy and once again morph. The attack goes awry from the beginning as Zedd clearly anticipated such an attack. Fortunately Zordon upon seeing that the Future Rangers wouldn't get the chance to engage Zedd opts to take Trey and Zorion in an effort to drive Zedd from the moon before dealing with Rita himself.

A great battle commences where Jason once again dons the Dragon Dagger and Dragon Shield while Tommy morphs into the White Ranger as the two battle Goldar and Silverback, having already removed Knasty Knight and Eye Guy from the fight. When Tommy morphs into Zeo Ranger V Red, Jason surprises his old friend Tommy when he morphs into the Gold Ranger again, revealing that in anticipation of some major fight he had contacted Trey and burrowed his powers again before even going to Zordon's memorial service. Soon it would be Jason's turn to be surprised when Tommy morphs into the Black Dino Ranger and activates Super Dino Mode. While struggling against Goldar and Silverback despite Tommy fighting alongside him, Jason thinks back to his fight with King Sphinx and fully rekindles his fighting spirit, awakening a whole new level of power of his own within his Red Ranger form. Jason and Tommy would later link up with Kimberly, Zoltar, and Andros, and together the five Rangers battle Rita Repulsa herself and thwart her attempt to trap Zordon in a time warp, creating an entirely new timeline in the process.

After saying their farewells to Zordon, who reveals that they didn't do any harm to the timeline and merely created a separate timeline and informs them of a great power on the distant planet of Phaedos that can be used to resurrect his counterpart, and company Jason, along with Kimberly, Tommy, Zoltar, and Andros return to their own time. Jason apologizes to Billy for not having the chance to catch up with his old friend, but Jason had to go on an important journey that could not be delayed and Billy had important matters concerning Zordon to discuss with Tommy. As such Jason bids farewell to Billy while Kimberly offers to accompany her old friend on his journey. Thus Jason and Kimberly depart to parts unknown, though presumably they would undoubtably be heading at some point soon on the journey to Triforia so Jason could return the Gold Ranger powers to Trey before they would have adverse effects on Jason again. Power Rangers: Future Force

Cosmic Fury[]

During Lord Zedd's takeover of Earth, multiple Ranger teams were captured and imprisoned. When the Cosmic Fury team returned for a counter attack, Billy helped to free his team, including Jason.

Back to Action[]

Jason is at the rebuilt Power Chamber, now known as the Morphin Nexus, along with Tommy and Kimberly while Billy works on restoring Zordon. Tommy asks Billy if he's 100% certain that it is Zordon he's bringing back as they don't want a repeat of the Robo-Rita incident. During Billy and Tommy's conversation, Jason and Kimberly talk about Kimberly's recent divorce, Jason's reconciliation with his old girlfriend Emily, and most notably how Kimberly, even decades later, still feels guilty for how she ended things with Tommy and wants to apologize for most likely hurting him with her letter in high school, but doesn't know how to start. Jason encourages her to just talk to him and clear the air as both had since moved on to other people, with Jason noting that Tommy is unlikely to still have any hard feelings over a letter she wrote in high school and the only way that that conversation could end, at least as far as Jason is concerned, is with Kimberly finding closure. They are then pulled out of their conversation when, they overhear Billy giving an overly technical explanation, reminiscent of their early days as Rangers, involving the computer's programming to assure Tommy that there was no way for anyone other than Zordon to be brought back. Much to Jason and Kimberly's surprise, Tommy not only seems to understand Billy's technical jargon perfectly, but also manages to translate it into "layman's terms" to his stunned teammates the same way that Trini used to. Tommy answers their unasked question with the words, "Hello, I'm Dr. Tommy Oliver, respected scientist", which he says with good humor. Jason then tells Kimberly that he keeps forgetting that Tommy is a scientist now, and still can't believe that he's a doctor, to which Kimberly agrees. Just as Billy states that he's locked on to Zordon's energy signature within the Morphin Grid and that he should be back momentarily, Billy notes that communications with Cranston Tech seem to be down. After varifying that the communications issue wasn't from the Morphin Nexus' end, Billy teleports out to find out the problem. Immediately afterward, the Morphin Nexus is attacked and the room soon fills up with Putties, Z-Putties, Tenga Warriors, and Quantrons and Jason and Kimberly are surrounded and struggle to fend off the sheer numbers of grunts. Jason and Kimberly can only look on in horror as Goldar, Ecliptor, Superex, and Silverback manage to destroy Tommy in his Ultimate Ranger form. Devastated by the loss of another one of his oldest friends, Jason summons the willpower to fight through the grunts and reaches the four villains. With his Power Sword he is able to destroy Goldar's Sun Power and Ecliptor's Moon Power, immense and unlimited sources of power similar in nature to Diabolico's Star Power, causing them to lose their Goldar Ultimus and Ecliptor Ultimus forms and revert to their default forms. Unfortunately, the four are still powerful enough to destroy Jason in his Red Ranger form, before blowing the Morphin Nexus up.

His mortal body destroyed, Jason and Tommy's spirits are drawn deep within the heart of the Morphin Grid. There they remain a number of months before they are surrounded by a bright light and hear a voice identifying itself as Annu Morphitar, the creator of the Morphin Grid and all creation. The being resurrects Jason as Master Red's successor and appoints him the new leader of the Morphin Masters. Morphitar then gives Jason and Tommy a mandate to restore the Morphin Nexus and temporarily resurrect Zordon to guide their team one last time before he returns to the Morphin Grid for good, as Morphitar has big plans for Zordon in the Morphin Grid. Morphitar then informs them, along with Trini who's also been resurrected as a Morphin Master, that their old team is surrounded by thousands of Putties, Tengas, and Quontrons and are being relentlessly attacked within the old Zeo Power Chamber by the Green Psycho Ranger. Jason and Tommy then lead a group of Morphin Masters and Grandmasters consisting of themselves, the Grandmasters Master Red, Master Pink, Kanoi Watanabe, and Udonna, and the Morphin Masters Kendrix Morgan, Master Green, Master Blue, Master Black, Master Gold, Zayto, Trini, Cole Evans, Shane Clarke, and James Navarro. The sixteen then effortlessly destroy the army of Putties, Tengas, and Quantrons besieging the Rangers in the Morphin Nexus ruins, creating miniaturized Z-Waves with their staves as they casually walk towards the besieged Rangers, and proceed to the Zeo Chamber. Jason and the others witness as Tommy effortlessly destroys the Green Psycho Ranger by blasting her with the Staff of Leadership, which he had just telekinetically retrieved. Throughout all this, the Morphin Masters and Grandmasters manage to keep their faces from the Rangers. Minh, having heard of the Morphin Masters and their encounters with the Dino and Cosmic Fury Rangers from Billy, asks them if they're the Morphin Masters. Jason, gesturing towards himself, Kendrix, Master Green, Master Blue, Master Black, Master Gold, Zayto, Trini, Cole, Shane, and James, calmly states "We are". As he says this the group step out of the shadows, revealing their identities to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Karone. Day of the Reunion

The assembled Morphin Masters and Grandmasters then slam their staves on the ground, generating an energy wave that rebuilds the Morphin Nexus. They then lead the Rangers to the upper level of the Morphin Nexus to witness the walls of the building being assembled, the control panels materializing from the Morphin Grid, and Zordon's shattered energy tube being restored. Finally, Zordon materializes within the tube. Jason watches as Tommy informs the Rangers and Zordon that, unfortunately, their reunion will be short-lived as Morphitar has bigger plans for him in the Morphin Grid and thus he has only been brought back to life for as long as it will take for him to guide the Rangers on their final mission before they retire for good: the defeat of Lokar and his Grand Alliance of Evil, once and for all. While Trini tells her daughter how she loves her and how proud she is of her and Tommy apologizes to Kat for not being able to stay with her and their family like they both would like, Jason talks to Billy about leadership and assures his old friend that, while the road ahead will be long and hard, he is ready to lead the team and encourages him to never blame himself for any setbacks they will inevitably have to face. With the words, "May the power protect you", to the assembled Rangers and Zordon, the Morphin Masters and Grandmasters prepare to lead through a portal. Just as they are about to leave, Billy asks if they are returning to the Morphin Grid now. Jason and Tommy explain that first they must stop in Pine Ridge, as it has come to their attention the Cosmic Fury Rangers are in need of having their Zords restored. Thunderzords Unleashed

Jason, Trini, and Tommy later return after the defeat of the Grand Alliance of Evil to pay their last respects to Zordon, before they escort him back to the Morphin Grid. Grand Finale

Day of the Dragon[]

Around this time, Jason traveled to the year 2019 in the dimension of the Power Rangers along with Master Black, Master Blue, Trini, Kendrix, Master Green, Master Gold, and Zayto. While there, Jason first appears as the Red Morphin Master in a vision to his counterpart, during his unmorphed fight with King Sphinx. Jason encourages his counterpart not to give up as the latter is at his breaking point. He then shows his counterpart visions of both himself and three of their other counterparts successfully overcoming some of their greatest challenges as Rangers. Jason's Battle

After the alternate Jason and Tommi retrieve the Thunder Slingers and the Rangers use them to defeat Rita's Super Putties, Jason and the other Morphin Masters arrive in the Command Center, release Zordon's essence from his ship's main frame by opening the Morphin Grid, and restore his physical body, bestowing upon him the powers of the Jurassic Ranger in the process so he can pilot Titanus, who in this dimension requires either a pilot or remote control to operate. Gung Ho!

Jason and the other Morphin Masters next appear after the final battle against Rita to bid farewell to the Rangers where they are joined by Zordon, who upon being destroyed during the final battle was resurrected as a Morphin Master. The Morphin Masters then return to the Morphin Grid with their new member. Grand Finale

Personality[]

Jason was highly respected during his time as the leader of the Power Rangers and is shown to have some of the best martial arts skills of the Rangers. Jason is also the only one to ever best Tommy in single combat when Tommy was still the much more powerful Green Ranger (although the two tie in a martial arts competition before Tommy becomes evil). It is also hinted that Tommy still looks up to Jason as a great leader when he asks Jason for leadership advice after Jason becomes the Gold Ranger even though Jason is assumed to be second-in-command. He also traded duties with Tommy during their MMPR season 1 and Zeo tenures with one as red and the other as 6th member. Though in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, when Jason is turned evil by Maligore, he fights Tommy and dangles him over the edge of Maligore's pit saying "Now I have all the muscles and the power." In "The Green Candle", Jason fought Goldar in an attempt to retrieve the Green Candle and save Tommy's Green Ranger powers but aborted the effort to return to Earth to save Tommy's life. Tommy's Green Ranger powers weakened from that point on until they failed completely in "Green No More". Though Tommy didn't blame Jason for the loss of his powers, Jason himself took the failure deeply to heart. He lamented in " Missing Green" that he was the reason Tommy lost his power, and even years later in "King for a Day", he was adamant about rescuing Tommy for fear of failing him again. Following the death of Trini Kwan, Jason never blamed Billy for the tragedy but instead blamed himself, feeling as though he had failed her just as he had failed Tommy before her, a feeling compounded by his subsequent capture alongside Tommy and Kimberly, which left Jason with a profound sense of self-doubt, perhaps to a greater extent than either Tommy or Kimberly. Fortunately Zordon was able to get through to him and make him realize that none of the things that he has been blaming himself for were his fault and that he couldn't prevented any of them and that he hadn't failed Trini, his team, or Tommy all those years ago for that matter. With the slate wiped clean, Jason was able to find the inner strength to unleash the full power of his Red Ranger form after once again remembering his fight with King Sphinx and subsequently broke the Youth Center's bench-pressing record, despite struggling with both initially.

JasonMorph2ndPilot

Jason morphing in the second pilot episode.

  • Jason was portrayed by Austin St. John in most of his television and film appearances, and was voiced by Yuri Lowenthal in the video game Power Rangers: Super Legends and the animated special Power Rangers: Future Force.
  • As the Mighty Morphin Red Ranger, his suit actor in Super Sentai & U.S. Footage footage from Zyuranger was Hiroshi Maeda (前田 浩 Maeda Hiroshi). His sub was & Hirofumi Fukuzawa (福沢 博文 Fukuzawa Hirofumi) in Super Sentai footage. In US footage, his suit actors were Erik Betts and Hien Nguyen.
  • As the Gold Zeo Ranger, his suit actor in Super Sentai footage from Ohranger was Naoki Ōfuji (大藤 直樹 Ōfuji Naoki). In US footage, his suit actor was Tatsuro Koike (小池達朗 Koike Tatsuro).
  • Lead writer Tony Oliver elaborated on St. John’s casting. “He came in and just had a look and confidence that really impressed Kathy Wallin (Casting Director) and I. He was a talented martial artist and obviously in great shape. He also brought a youthfulness that we felt was necessary.”
  • After filming the episode "Opposites Attract", Austin St. John, Walter Jones and Thuy Trang quit Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The reason being contract disputes, since the actors were underpaid due to the non-union status of the company at the time. However, the characters of the actors still appeared in several of the following episodes, until they were written out in "The Power Transfer" story arc. Up until then, a combination of body doubles and stock footage of Jason, Zack and Trini were used to give the illusion that they were still on the show. Also, beginning with the episode "Welcome to Venus Island" until "The Power Transfer", whenever Jason, Zack and Trini were morphed, their voices were done by both voice doubles and recycled dialogue from past episodes, as Austin, Walter and Thuy had quit the series before the post-production ADR for these episodes was completed. The series' associate producer Paul F. Rosenthal served as the voice double for Jason in these final episodes. This is also why Tommy was given leadership duties before Jason left the team; the producers wanted to transition between Jason and Tommy before Jason was written out of the show, along with Zack and Trini.

Notes[]

  • Jason was the first of the three departing Rangers to share onscreen interaction with his successor (then teammate) when he returned in Zeo, Something that was unique to him until decades later when Zack and Adam would also meet.
  • The role of Jason was originally auditioned and won by David Yost, but David thought he did not look the part of a leader, so he was re-cast as Billy, with Austin hired in his place to portray Jason.
  • Jason broke an evil spell out of Tommy, while Tommy broke an evil spell out of Jason.
  • The phrase "Back to Action!" was first coined by Jason (in the MMPR three-part episode "The Mutiny"); used when the Rangers, usually helmet-less, would return to battle after some form of break. Also, while the phrase "It's Morphin' Time!" was first coined by Zordon (in the second MMPR episode "High Five"), Jason's subsequent delivery of the line was what made it famous.
  • Jason's birth date was listed as October 20th on both the profile card on the box of the 1993 eight-inch-tall Red Ranger Figure and on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers CD-Rom. This gives him the same birthday as Tommy.
  • Jason holds the distinction of being the only character in the original cast of MMPR to share the same first name of his actor. In real life, Austin St. John revealed at the 2007 Power Morphicon that Austin is his stage name and that his real name is Jason Geiger.
  • Jason, along with Tommy, Billy, Adam, Kimberly, and Rocky are the only Rangers to appear in more than 100 episodes.
  • His name is based on Jason Scott Lee, a martial artist, and actor. He is best known for playing Bruce Lee in the semi-biographical movie Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.
  • Jason was originally named Victor Lee. The name was used by Mark Dacascos' Red Ranger character in Saban's Bio-Man pilot from 1986.
  • Notably, during his time as the Gold Ranger, Jason exclusively wore black clothing despite not being classified as a Black Ranger.
  • While he was the Gold Ranger, Jason was the first Power Ranger to be named after something other than the color of the underlying costume, which was black.
  • The character of Jason was voted as the greatest Red Ranger of all time in an ABC Family contest held in 2004, and again in 2007 in a contest by Toon Disney.
  • Jason in the Japanese dub of Power Rangers is voiced by Daiki Nakamura who also voiced Dark King Zylpheeza in Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive.
  • Prior to the Disney Era, Jason was considered as a returning character for Hexagon, a season eleven story concept that preceded Ninja Storm. In it, Jason would have mentored the Thunder Rangers in opposition to Tommy's Wind Rangers, and would have opposed the Hexagon program as a whole due to feeling it too powerful.
  • Jason's birthday was given as October 20, making him a Libra.
  • Jason's birthplace was given as Los Angeles.
  • Asked about what kinds of martial arts he practiced, Jason stated the styles he had studied were a long list which included kenpo, taekwondo, judo, and shinkido, but his favorites styles were taekwondo and kenpo.
  • Ironically, Jason's portrayer Austin St. John's birth name is Jason Geiger.
