Ancient History is the thirty-fourth episode of Power Rangers Universe, serving as an unofficial epilogue to Power Rangers Discovery, and features the return of Lester Crest, as well as the return of Malvor, who subsequently joins the Arkeyan army. It also features the debut of the Chain Sector Key.
Synopsis[]
As Arthur leads a small group of rangers to rescue Florian - who has now been corrupted by Pom-Pom's metal spice, Colonel Xiao and Agent 263 lead the rest of the rangers on a "special project" which involves the Chrono Sector Key. Through its use, the group revisit important moments in history, all while travelling back to the time period which marked His Magnificence's rise to power.
Plot[]
263, in his personal journal, explains the plan he has for the rangers on how their Chrono Sector Key project will go. He gets up early and allows for everyone to get ready by waking them up early as well. He scares Joi awake, gets Ryan up - who fell asleep reading the book "Devil into the White City" by Erik Larson, wakes Dimitri up by holding his nose. Joi switches on the lights in Colonel Xiao's room which wakes the commanding officer up in a panic, and the two are soon pranked when they go to wake Moose up. Moose, who has been up for a while, has set his hotel room up to look like he has been targeted by a gang and then proceeds to drop out of the closet pretending to be dead upon 263 and Ryan's arrival, falling on top of Ryan. Later on, as they go over the schedule for the project, they suddenly get an alert that there are stowaways on the Prometheus, and one of them crashes though the lab where the three are. Another intruder ambushes Colonel Xiao, while one more ambushes Joi. After they take out the first intruder, they find yet another one whose face surprisingly falls off, and much to their surprise - it speaks, as Roswells can speak perfectly fine when their masks are off.
Dimitri and Moose find another Roswell, but thereās one more left. Colonel Xiao tells them to bring the Roswells they do have to the bridge for now. Colonel Xiao goes back through the ship to look for the last one. 263 and Ryan continue to interrogate the Roswell they have. It explains that they are Wellimites, a lifeform created by His Magnificence who are forced to work as Roswells when wearing the masks. But they are getting tired of the low wages and frequent overtime, so they hoped to ask for help from the rangers. Unsatisfied with their pleas, the group has the band of Roswells tied up in a corner of a conference room as 263 and Colonel Xiao prepare for a seminar to discuss the Special project, introduced by Agent Paul Davis, an alcoholic Special Projects Coordinator at the Galactic Affairs Bureau. After some on-stage malfunctions, Davis fumbles his way through the seminar, which explains the origins of the empire, based upon 263's claimed research. As the seminar goes on, and 263 is forced to take over at various points, Back on the Destiny, Russell is having no luck tracking Pom-Pom and Florian's whereabouts, while Megan still feels guilty about causing Florian to succumb to Metal Spice. Arthur attempts to remind her that their bond is strong enough to ensure he will be fine, by looking back at how he was able to get Florian on the team as a volunteer, and in turn getting him to gradually improve from his days as a hard-partying lifestyle coach; he's still confident there's at least a shred of the real Florian inside of him. Speaking of Florian, Pom-Pom introduces His Magnificence to her new "husband" - Metal Florian. Gazla sees the metal beast as the perfect asset for their army, but Metal Florian vindictively slams Gazla to the ground, refuses to work with him, and threatens him give him some more metal spice, as he is addicted to it.
Back on the Prometheus, 263, Ryan and Moose are about to test out the Chrono Sector Key. 263 is highly infested in this project, and wants major attention to detail, so much so that he wants them to be done his way. First, so that they know it works, he has Moose dial in a random time period - and Moose dials in 2024, before suggesting an arm-wrestle to decide between 263 and Ryan who goes back to 2024. Ryan wins the match, and he goes through the time portal, which is generated by a Uni-Controller, while Moose and 263 get some lunch. Unbeknownst to them, one of the Roswells follows Ryan into the time portal unnoticed. Ryan emerges from the time portal in 2024 - one year on following end of the Final Quantum War and the destruction of Xenu, and finds himself in the main hallways of the new Discovery Command on the outskirts Sovereign City. He sees several photos of the Discovery rangers as part of a gallery within the building, moments before 263, back in 2075, manages to get an inter-temporal communication device to work, and checks on Ryan's status. Ryan says he's in some place belonging to the Discovery Corps, which rings a bell, since that was the ranger team that stopped Xenu. After researching records from that time period, he asks Ryan to speak to the Commanding Officer, Lester Crest. As Ryan communicates with 263, he stumbles into the command room, and coincidentally bumps into Lester, who is quite surprised that there's some tourism in the control room, only to notice that Ryan has some morpher that hasn't been invented yet, and assumes he's from the future, which Ryan assures he is, and he's one of 12 rangers fighting a threat in their time period. To this end, Lester happily agrees to help him. As this happens, the elite Roswell infiltrates the stasis chamber vault, and is given instructions by Gazla to seek out a stasis pod containing a feared General of Xenu who was considered to be one of the most revered, and goes by the name of Malvor - who was frozen in stasis following Xenu's destruction; he notes that His Magnificence would benefit well from someone with experience serving under an evil army.
On his request, the Roswell seizes Malvor's stasis pod, and returns to the time portal undetected. When the Roswell returns to the present, Gazla transports the stasis pod to Xibalba, while the Roswell searches for his friends. Back in the past, Lester inquires Ryan, whom he figures is from the future, about the situation in his time period. Ryan tells Lester that the Arkeyan Empire had risen to power over the past decades, and by the 2070s, many Universal Sectors and planets, including Earth, had been conquered by His Magnificence, although Earth had rebuilt by time Star Battleforce's ranger series program was initiated; Lester figures out it must have taken them quicker than he thought for the world to rebuild, and he's getting goosebumps thinking about what the future holds. Ryan even notes that he and his friend and future teammate Megan were off-world at the time Earth was being invaded, 14 years before they became rangers, which Lester imagines would have been pretty rough. He credits Ryan, having time-travelled from the future, for warning him in advance, and assures him he'll research "this Arkeyan threat and Xibalba nonsense" and maybe call for an expedition there to destroy His Magnificence before it becomes a thing. Ryan likes the idea, but changing the past will cause drastic changes in the future - and Lester even figures out he's watched time-travel movies like Back to the Future. Lester is hungry and decides to take Ryan with him for lunch; Ryan is aware that the Discovery Corps was once home to a group of Power Rangers who stopped Xenu, and embark on Isis missions to places within the Sub-Atomic Realm, the most recent being Isis IV, as Lester notes that Isis V is currently underway, and the Discovery Corps is one of the most profitable corporations in America, and is in the process of opening hubs in London, Paris, and Berlin.
After getting some food, Lester takes Ryan to a monument at Discovery Command commemorating the Discovery Rangers, and reveals to him that he became a later addition to their ranks as the Continental Ranger, which was ultimately the cure for his wasting disease, and gave him more opportunities in life like succeeding Solomon Burnham as Commanding Officer, the father of the Red Discovery Ranger, Michael. Ryan imagines that Michael would have gone on the Isis V expedition, having led Isis IV, but Lester reveals that Michael declined to lead Isis V, and had decided to leave Discovery to join his father in building a new colony on Chimeria, which was previously conquered by Xenu. This makes Ryan wonder about what happened to the rest of the rangers and others involved in their journey; Lester reveals that Daniel is still enjoying his retirement on his homestead with his wife and three children, but occasionally visits the new facility as a professional speaker for new talent at the organisation, while Laura continues to have a successful racing career and has recently won her first title as world champion, the first woman to do so. He also mentions that Jimmy is enjoying a job as an associate producer for Theodore Peters at the Peters Majestic film studio, and he and Erin are still in a relationship and are both living with Jimmy's mother; speaking of Erin, Lester reveals that she graduated from college, and is now a history teacher at an elementary school - and her mental wellbeing has significantly improved thanks to her new life with Jimmy and his mother. Lastly, he mentions Anton Baxter, who was possessed by Xenu during the war, has rekindled his involvement with Discovery since his stint on the Isis IV mission, having once again become a shareholder, and has a place among the company's board. Ryan is impressed that the former Discovery rangers and allies have achieved a lot a year on after the war.
Suddenly, 263 emerges from the time portal, and questions Ryan as to how much intel he accumulated from the past. Lester is befuddled by the emergence of yet another ranger from the future, but welcomes another guest. This is when 263 tells Lester that he's from the bureau rather than Star Battleforce. Despite such a rather awkward moment, Lester wishes them both well in their war in the future, and gives them the option to allow them to make an expedition so their future to change, but they both reject, as they go through the time portal back to the present. Everyone is back in the conference room, where Davis is now giving a seminar to do with four of the five Arkeyan intruders. Ryan insists that the Roswells are fine since they seem to have reformed. 263 doesnāt believe that and says they should throw them out the hatch. Ryan and 263 argue, but Dimitri thinks maybe they have some use to them. 263 thinks their naivety will trip them up someday. Some cackling is suddenly heard. Itās a fifth, red-jacketed Roswell. He has made his way to the main computer room as per orders of Pom-Pom to stop the rangers from reaching the past by any means necessary. While the red Roswell explains they have zero problems with their empire working conditions, the others argue about how theyāve gotten into this mess. The red Roswell tries to get their attention. But they tell him to shut up. He continues his explanation and says the five of them will be promoted to a Commandant of their choosing if they successfully stop the rangers from reaching their intended time period.
Back on Xibalba, the other Roswell delivers the stasis pod to His Magnificence, who has Gazla unlock it. He does so, and smoke emerges from the pod, and Malvor, once a general under Xenu in the past, emerges from it! Malvor is disoriented, and has no idea where he is, demanding who is in command of him now. His Magnificence deduces that he knows Xenu and his army very well, including him, but Malvor retaliates, and refuses to kneel before him, before Gazla intervenes and stops them both. At His Magnificence's mercy, he explains his previous allegiance to Xenu, and his army's destruction at the hands of the Discovery Rangers, and he knows enough to benefit His Magnificence's campaign to conquer the Universe in his image. His Magnificence is intrigued by Malvor's desire to join them, and he is swiftly accepted into the empire. Back on the Prometheus, after they watch a video documentary and some subsequent research, the special project team work on an upgrade to the vessel that allows them to create a large time portal to the past. The time portal cannon is powered by a spare Uni-Controller with the Chrono Sector Key, and Joi uses the controls to create a time portal to take the Prometheus back to the 2020s, and the Prometheus goes through the time portal. They successfully arrive in 2029, but The four Roswells on the bridge cause the Orion to crash land. One crew member says there is minimal damage and will work on restoring the system. This allows 263, Colonel Xiao, Joi, Ryan, Dimitri and Moose to explore Earth, prior to the invasion. Moose wonders if this is the exact place His Magnificence was born, as 263 says that it could be miles away, deducing that he's not a complete genius to know where the Arkeyan warlord would be born.
Unbeknownst to them, the five Elite Roswells are watching from behind a tree. The Red Roswell decides to use 263 to divide and conquer. Back on board the Destiny, Megan is still down about Florian, while Russell is hoping the special project half of the group is doing well. Wild Bill is worried about Tsurugiās trustworthiness, but Arthur recaps how he began trusting him lately as their comrade on recent missions. Back in the past, 263 leads red Roswell on, as the Red Indaver says they have better teamwork than the rangers and they do a roll call, introducing themselves as the Elite Roswells - Roswell 1, Roswell 2, Roswell 3, Roswell 4, and Roswell 5. They fall over after their own roll call explosion. Colonel Xiao steps forward and says none of them need to morph to defeat these Roswells, much to the others' surprise. Ryan, Joi, Dimitri, Moose and 263 take on the Roswells. They are able to knock them around pretty easily. Colonel Xiao attempts to join the fight, but he has a weak back when unmorphed. Ryan, Joi and Moose check on him when suddenly 263 decides to morph and finish off the Elite Roswells with a single Blazing Storm Slash. They head back on the Prometheus as Joi, on orders of Prometheus commanding officer Colonel Stelzer, gets them back on track towards their destination. Based upon an energy reading, they then realize that the fact the empire wants to stop them from doing so means there truly is something hidden in the past they must find out.
