A Fork in the Road is the twenty-seventh episode of Power Rangers Discovery. It is the first part of Season 1's four-part endgame, and serves as a major turning point in the series' storyline.

Synopsis[]

Commander Burnham takes Michael to his mother's grave to take his mind off recent events and so he can learn more about her; Michael, having faced Scermazu, began to lose control over his Gorilla DNA as it was revealed that it fed on Zyncado power. When Scermazu stages another attack on the Rangers, Michael finds himself overwhelmed by his Gorilla DNA and goes on a rampage, which results in two of the rangers seriously injured.

Plot[]

Continuing from the previous episode, Michael is taken to the infirmary and put under observation until he can undergo a cell-line test, which scans the body for any impurities. The following morning, Lester arrives at Discovery Command, where the medical chief informs him that Commander Burnham has requested for his son to undergo a test, fearing that something malicious may have unearthed within his Gorilla DNA. Lester starts a remote cell-line test on Michael, and after the test concludes, it is discovered that it is indeed something to do with his Gorilla DNA, and that it feeds on Zyncado Power.

At Ranger Ops, the Isis III crew members are discussing whether they knew something was wrong with Michael yesterday as Lester breaks the news regarding Michael's condition to them. He states to them that the DNA sampled from the Golden Banana came with a protective coating to protect against negative side effects, but with every use of Michael's Gorilla form over the course of the Rangers' previous battles, the protection gradually wore itself thin to the point where its great power could come at the expense of his humanity. Erin then asks Lester what he knows about Scermazu; Lester replies that, having watched Xenu State Media, Scermazu has been biologically linked to the Omni-Field, granting him the ability to create copies of his prey, human, mutant, and disciple alike, which leads Jimmy to tell the others to expect some "Disciple Nostalgia". Meanwhile, Scermazu is interested in Xenuā€™s offer to join his cause, but he wonā€™t do it just to amuse the evil lord. Xenu orders all new disciple manufacturing to be shut down and says Scermazu can join as a player with his choice of prizes if he does well. Malvor, Cubois and Imperiax are not so keen on playing with him.

Michael, despondent over this revelation, is seen sitting outside Command when his father comes to check on him; he informs him that today is the anniversary of his human mother, Miko's death, and wants him to visit her grave with him. They visit the grave to pay their respects to her, and Michael, since he was to young to understand at the time of her death, wants to learn more about her mother; She was his secretary during his early days after founding the Discovery Corps, and eventually married had Michael as a son. When Michael was five, Miko fell ill and before she died from her illness, Miko forbade Solomon from having his son join Discovery's front lines in favour of working in the organization's zoology department, fearful of his safety - one of the reasons Solomon did not initially trust his son to become a ranger at first. Meanwhile, the remaining Rangers are alerted to Scermazu's presence, and are surprised to see people running away from real live ghosts. One of the ghosts is about to assault a woman, so Daniel runs over and bodyslams him to the ground, causing him to disintegrate. Laura remembers that is exactly what happened during their last encounter with the Instinctian Ripper.

Scermazu is in the city park, where Michael and his father are taking a walk. He is confronted by other rangers, who engage in a fight with him; the commander is against his son fighting after so much recent burden placed on him, but Michael stops him and morphs to join his friends in the fight. Scermazu overpowers Michael, but just as he is about to finish him off, Michael, in a last-ditch effort, switches to his Gorilla form. Though Michael deals serious damage to Scermazu, he is outmatched, and suddenly feels the same Zyncado energy overwhelm him and deals Scermazu a severe blow. The other rangers regroup around Michael, but he suddenly goes bezerk and attacks them, prompting Scermazu to flee. None of the Rangers' attacks can even weaken him in any way; Daniel and Erin unleash their animalities and attempt to subdue him, but Michael blocks them, and unleashes a wave of Zyncado at them, knocking them back and forcing them to de-morph. Only Jimmy, Laura and Lester are left standing, and they struggle to control Michael, Commander Burnham, seeing the effects of the Zyncado become apparent, intervenes and uses his Chimerian abilities to expel the Zyncado from Michael, causing him to de-morph and return to normal. As Commander Burnham comforts his son, Jimmy and Laura tend to their injured teammates. Back in Discovery Command's infirmary, the doctor says that the Zyncado Michael used to attack Daniel and Erin was causing a rapidly-progressing infectious disease, and is getting worse by the minute.

Michael is in his living quarters recuperating as he is visited by no other than his mother. Michael embraces her, and tells her that he remembers the moment he watched his mother die while in the hospital. She had told him ā€œAll life on this planet is connected in some way.ā€ So they will always be connected even if she dies. He becomes emotional knowing there is absolutely no way he would be able to see his mother again. Michael then tries to wrap his head around the possibility that this really is his mother; She takes his hand in hers. Later, Michael regroups with Laura, Jimmy and Lester at Ops, where Jimmy is furious at him injuring Erin, leading to a heated argument in which Michael retaliates by stating that he couldn't control himself, to which Jimmy accuses him for doing it on purpose. As Laura tries to calm down the two, Lester ultimately halts it and informs them that work is on a serum to treat the Zyncadovirus, the infectious disease, is underway; He mentions that there was once a pandemic on KO-35 of Zyncadovirus that nearly wiped out its population. They then discuss the severity of the Zyncado's damage to the Gorilla DNA, which leads to Laura, Jimmy and Lester all agreeing that the Gorilla DNA should be removed from him for his own safety, but Michael refuses to have Lester remove it from him.

Suddenly, the alarms go off, and they all head to the command room, where the commander informs them that Scermazu is back in the city, but tells Michael to stay behind for his own safety. Lester, Laura and Jimmy morph and confront Scermazu, who has created duplicates of the Generation 9 Stormbreaker, Generation 10 Sharp Shooter, and the Generation 10 Trump Card. At command, Michael tells his father that he saw his mother earlier, to his father's surprise. At this moment, he tells his son that it may be one of Scermazu's tricks, and asks him to be careful. Michael is walking with his mother across town, having another conversation - this time about everything he's been doing since becoming a ranger. He suddenly sees the others fighting Scermazu and the restored disciples, who notices Michael's presence and slices his mother in half, and attacks Michael, who then stumbles toward his mother and takes her into his arms. She wishes they could have talked more and is happy to see he has grown up well. She thanks him for the chance to have seen him again before she disappears; Michael has to watch his mother die a second time.

Enraged, Michael charges towards Scermazu and the others help him gain the upper hand. As the fight rages, Jimmy contacts Lester-Tron, who is overseeing the serum, asking for an update on its progress; Lester-Tron tells him that it is 90% complete, to Jimmy's relief, as he cannot afford to lose Erin. In the infirmary, Erin's infection worsens, as does Daniel's. Just in time, the serum is complete, and the two are given a dose of it, but doctors struggle to get it to work. Before he flees, Scermazu performs a memory dump, which enlarges the two of the three restored disciples, and prompts Michael, Jimmy and Laura to form the Great Discovery Megazord, and Lester to form the Continental Megazord, which equips the Bat Slicer. Eventually, the two megazords combine into the Grand Discovery Megazord, which finishes the two disciples off for good; at the same time, the medical staff are finally able to save Daniel and Erin. Later that evening, Lester, Jimmy and Laura return to ops, where they are reunited with Daniel and Erin, while Jimmy is very happy to see Erin, but notices she feels miserable after everything she had gone through. Lester tells them that he will now closely monitor the Gorilla DNA, and will consider erasing it altogether if it comes to a point where it cannot be controlled at all, but tells the Rangers to get some rest for now. Meanwhile, Michael visits his motherā€™s grave one more time; He sees a bouquet of flowers left at her grave before leaving.
